Cinzia Tuena has published a new article in the journal Axon 10 (2026), 1–22: “Three Decrees of Mylasa that Attest Its Loyalty to Maussollos.”

The study edits and annotates a marble stele from Mylasa (Caria, today Milas), which preserves three decrees passed between 367/366 and 355/354 BCE by the city’s popular assembly and its three phylae. They are directed against three conspiracies against the Carian dynast and Persian satrap Maussollos of the Hecatomnid dynasty: the attempt to remove him from office, the desecration of a statue of his father Hecatomnus, and an assassination attempt in the sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos.

We are back in Basel after two wonderful weeks of early mornings, exciting discoveries, hard work, and new friendships! Villa dei Casoni - it was a pleasure, see you next year! 🏛️🫶

And just like that, our first excavation season at the Villa dei Casoni has come to an end.

After two intense weeks of early mornings, long days, dust, soil, pottery, unexpected discoveries, endless discussions, and shared meals, we have closed our trenches, packed away our tools, and left the villa behind.

What made these weeks so special was above all our team. We could not have wished for more commitment, endurance, good spirit, generosity, and camaraderie. Even when the days were long and the work demanding, the atmosphere remained extraordinary. These two weeks were a particularly powerful reminder of how much depends on the people working side by side.

We leave tired, a little dusty, with many new questions — thank you to this extraordinary team for everything you have given 🫶

Arrivederci, Villa dei Casoni. Until next season...

Yesterday was our Open Day at the Villa dei Casoni! 🏛️

A big thank you to everyone who came to visit us, meet the team, and discover the first results of our excavation. It was wonderful to share what we have uncovered during these first two weeks in the field with so many of you!

Ancient History is a team effort – especially when we take it into the field.

Everything we have achieved at the Villa dei Casoni over these past days has depended on every single member of our team bringing their own skills, knowledge, experience, and energy to the project.

None of this could have been accomplished by any one of us alone. It is the combination of different skills, perspectives, and simply many helping hands that makes the larger whole possible.

This first excavation season at the Villa dei Casoni has been a true team effort. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of it! ❤️❤️❤️

Long days in the field mean digging, documenting, discussing finds, and working together – but also well-earned breaks: lunch at our excavation house and, in the evening, plenty of delicious pasta around the table. 🍝

Archaeology is not only about uncovering the past. A field season is also about sharing everyday life, meals, ideas, and discoveries as a team.

The first few days of our excavation at the Villa dei Casoni are already behind us: early mornings, long days in the field, setting out trenches, digging, documenting, and washing plenty of pottery.

There is still much to uncover and many questions to answer, but the first days have already given us plenty to work with. And after hours of digging in the September heat, we are rewarded with some beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the Sabina landscape.

The archaeological investigations are being conducted under a permit granted by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Metropolitan City of Rome and the Province of Rieti.

Time to celebrate at Ancient History at Basel! 🎉 ☀️

At our End of Semester Apéro, we raised our glasses to the many achievements and events of this closing spring semester and looked ahead to the exciting projects and initiatives awaiting us in the coming months.

With our new SNF-funded project, “The Roman Villa as Ecosystem”, launching soon, a productive survey at the Villa dei Casoni (and another to come this September), three PhD theses successfully completed, an inspiring excursion in Lycia and Pamphylia, and many other initiatives, there is plenty to celebrate.

Summer is around the corner, but our work continues. Stay tuned as we share updates in the months ahead! Cheers!🥂
