SWISS FOLK TRADITIONS IN WINTER & SPRING

Would you like to experience local folk customs beyond Basler Fasnacht? Then check out one of following festivals!

The most famous carnival events include the Basel Fasnacht celebrations (February 19-21), the Chienbäse procession in Liestal (February 18) and the upcoming Tschäggättä parade in Lötschental (February 8 and 10).

Spring customs that create a regional spectacle every year include the rousing Chalandamarz bell processions in the Engadin valley (March 1). In Zurich the winter officially ends with the traditional Sechseläuten holiday (April 16) culminating in the burning of the giant 'Böögg', a 80 kg 'snowman' over three metres tall which is filled with fireworks and set alight at 18:00 hours sharp. When the head of the Böögg explodes, it signals the official end of winter. Tradition has it that the quicker it explodes, the hotter and longer the summer will be.

VOGEL GRYFF Samstag 20. Januar 2018 - Basel

Eine sieben Jahrhunderte alte Tradition

Der Vogel Gryff-Tag hat seine Wurzeln im 14. Jahrhundert. Jeden Januar ziehen die drei Wappentiere Wild Maa, Vogel Gryff und Leu durch das Kleinbasel.

Traditionsgemäss beginnt der Kleinbasler Festtag mit einer
F l o s s f a h r t, der sogenannten Talfahrt, des Wilde Maa. Dabei fährt er etwa um 10:30 Uhr den Rhein hinunter und tanzt auf seinem Floss, begleitet von Böllerschüssen und Trommelschlägen. Traditionsgemäss dreht der Wild Maa dabei dem Grossbasel den Rücken zu. Die Fahrt endet um 11:00 Uhr beim Kleinen Klingental grad bei der Mittleren Brücke, wo er von den beiden anderen Wappentieren Leu und Vogel Gryff sowie viel Publikum begrüsst wird. Der Vogel Gryff-Tag endet spät in der Nacht mit den Schlusstänzen.

Höhepunkte

Zur M i t t a g s z e i t auf der Mittleren Brücke führen die drei Ehrenzeichen der «Drei E.», der Kleinbasler Ehrengesellschaften zum Greifen, zur Hären und zum Rebhaus ihre traditionellen Tänze auf.

Ab 19.00 Uhr R h e i n g a s s e vor Hotel Merian Abendumgang mit der Olympia. In besonderem Licht und mit besonderem Klang.
