Because I like to practice what I preach, it is very important for me to take some time off to really emphasize the routines, boundaries and structures with my little ones as this leads to successful parenting 💚

I will be placing everything on hold until September 2022. It is super important for Mama Bear to take time out to ensure good health both physically and mentally. If we as parents are doing well, then our children are doing well.

We know that doing the work now pays off in the future 🧘

I will soon be back with lots of new and exciting adventures! If you have any questions or concerns you can contact Wesley Kew, our esteemed team member.

Ms. G's Practical Parenting Tip August 2021: The Wiggly Finger ☝️ - Back by popular demand!

As you may know, one of our core teachings is, “YOU are the change that you want to see within your child”. Try this technique, called the Wiggly Finger.

Understand that your child is mirroring you and that your child is a manifestation of your subconscious. When you find yourself pointing your finger at your child, BRING IT BACK TO YOURSELF. 🧘

Ask yourself the question that you are asking your child. Whatever the trigger is that is making you feel this way; it is starting with YOU. More often than not, it has very little to do with your child’s behaviour and a lot to do with what the child is stirring up inside of you.

Your child wants a biscuit before dinner and you tell them, ‘no’. Your child throws a tantrum and starts screaming and shouting.😫 Often when parents are confronted with the anger of their child at this moment, they may feel that they have done something wrong. When your child is acting out from an emotive place of lack, anger and disappointment, you need to understand that it is not a personal attack on you.

Of course, your child is upset, they want a biscuit. Their neocortex of the frontal lobe is not really developed yet. They don’t understand that they are going to eat in ten minutes time. They’re allowed to be angry but there is no need for you to feel threatened by it. You know that if you give them the biscuit now they’re not going to eat their dinner, they’re going to be hungry later, there’s probably going to be a sugar crash and they’re not going to want to go to sleep. You are able to use foresight. 🧠

In these moments, we need to remind ourselves that sometimes we need to care enough about our children to not care about how they feel in the moment. 💚

Ms. G's Practical Parenting Tip July 2021: Helping your child to process traumatic experiences 🧘

The death of a pet, the loss of a parent, moving home, the experience of a fire within the household or having an accident on a bicycle. Or if your child experienced or saw you in a moment of panic, where you were scared or in a highly stressed environment. What do we do to help children move past these experiences so that it does not harbor them, fester or later appear as anxieties or irrational fears?

We don’t want to sweep these situations under the rug. We don’t want to pretend that they didn’t happen. You’ll most certainly want to rehash this with your child and help them process. The best way to do this is through storytelling and reliving the situation that happened.

If you find yourself in a highly stressful situation, talk your child through the situation, dropping in emotional language and using rich vocabulary so that they can then also know to express themselves in the future. Remember the way that you speak to your child and the way that you communicate with them, ultimately becomes the way that they’re going to speak to you and communicate with you.

Sometimes we fall off the wagon. We’re all a little bit stressed at the moment with everything that is happening in the world. Something may trigger you that maybe wouldn’t have normally triggered you. This is an opportunity to come back to your child and say “I lost my cool. But what happened could have been handled differently.”

The key is, to use this as the learning. These are the most powerful ways to teach your child. We think that we need to teach our children when they make a mistake, but the best learning for children happens when we make mistakes and we are big enough to own up to them. 🧘

Ms. G's Practical Parenting Tip May 2021: Stop playing with the word 'NO' 🚫

If you want your child to understand the meaning of the word no, stop playing with this word. What do I mean by this?

A child needs to understand boundaries, consequences, and meaning of the word 'no'. This starts from a very young age when parents start with saying 'no' in a cute and playful way. It’s very difficult for a child to distinguish when it is a cute 'no' and when it is a serious 'no'.

We need to be very careful how we use our words. 'No' can cause frustration, it leads toddlers and young children to feel disempowered and will ultimately lead to emotional burst outs.

Think of what it is that you’re saying no to on a daily basis. How many times a day do you say no to your child? Only use it for the absolute non-negotiables in your home. So that your child knows that when you say “No!”, you mean it.

If you want to change the behaviour that you see in your child, you must change the feeling that underlies the behaviour. You can’t do anything about the behaviour until you get to the feeling.

How do we know what our children are feeling? Well, how does your child make you feel? The way your child makes you feel is exactly how they feel. It’s a mirror effect. As we always say, It starts with YOU. 🧘

Ms. G's Practical Parenting Tip April 2021: The Truth about Toddlers & Tantrums 🤯

If you as a parent are able to identify what type of tantrum your child is having at a particular time, you will be better able and equipped to deal with the situation at hand.

There are 3 types of tantrums:
⭐ Emotional tantrums/breakdowns
⭐ Situational tantrums
⭐ Mock tantrums – the master manipulation

If you are dealing with a lot of tantrums in your household, you need to start asking yourself these questions:
💚 What is my part as the parent in this?
💚 What type of tantrum is my child having?

When you start tuning in and getting present, it helps you to understand better. From that point forward you can start coming in with your strategies.

If you are able to identify the type of tantrum that your child is having, pop it down in the comments and I'll give you some tools and tips on how to deal with that particular tantrum.
