To my fellow School Counselor Associates,
Over the past week, I've read the posts, listened to the shared struggles, and felt the weight many of us are carrying. It is completely understandable if you are feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or even questioning whether to stay.
But let's remind ourselves of one key fact: we are the pioneers of this role.
Pioneer work is rarely smooth. When you are the first to walk a path, the ground is rough, the maps aren't fully drawn, and every single step takes extra effort. Right now, both we and our schools are in an adjustment phase. It simply takes time for a massive system to integrate a brand-new position and set up clear workflows.
The current disorganization isn't a sign that this was a mistake. It is just the reality of starting something from scratch.
What we are doing today matters so much. We are laying the groundwork and opening doors for student support that simply didn't exist before. In time, these rough edges will smooth out, processes will settle, and the stars will align. Until then, let's give the system, and ourselves, the patience and grace to adjust.
Please don't lose heart. Take things one day, one student, and one step at a time. We chose this work because our students need guidance, advocacy, and care, and that core mission hasn't changed. Let's stick together, support one another, and keep building. We can do this!
