How to Form the Present Continuous
Formula: Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing
I → am
You/we/they → are
He/she/it → is

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
I am studying.She is running.They are watching TV.
Negative
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
I am not sleeping.He isn't coming.We aren't eating now.
Question

Short forms (contractions) are very common:
I'm working
You're reading
He's playing
She's not here / She isn't here
We're going
They aren't coming
-ing Form Spelling Rules
Most verbs: just add -ing
→ play → playing, work → working, eat → eating
Verbs ending in silent -e: drop the -e
→ write → writing, dance → dancing, make → making
One-syllable verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant: double the final consonant
→ run → running, sit → sitting, swim → swimming
(Exceptions: don't double if the verb ends in -w, -x, -y: snow → snowing)
Verbs ending in -ie: change to -y + ing
→ die → dying, lie → lying
Main Uses of Present Continuous
Actions happening right now / at the moment of speaking
Shh! The baby is sleeping.
What are you doing right now?
I am typing this explanation for you.
Temporary actions or situations (not permanent)
She is living in Mansoura this month (but maybe not forever).
I'm staying with friends until my apartment is ready.
He is working as a waiter these days.
Changing or developing situations (trends)
The weather is getting warmer.
More people are using electric cars now.
Prices are rising quickly this year.
Fixed plans / arrangements in the near future (especially with a time expression)
We are meeting at 7 pm tomorrow.
What are you doing this weekend?
She's flying to Cairo next Friday.
Annoyance / irritation (with always, constantly, forever)
He's always losing his keys!
You're constantly complaining about everything.
Verbs NOT normally used in continuous tenses (stative verbs)
These describe states, feelings, senses, possession, or thoughts — use simple present instead:
like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, understand, believe, remember, forget, own, have (possession), seem, appear, hear, see, smell, taste (when not deliberate action)
Examples:
Wrong: I am knowing the answer.
Right: I know the answer.
Wrong: She is having a car.
Right: She has a car.
But OK if action: I'm having dinner (eating), He's seeing the doctor (meeting).
Quick Practice Sentences
Right now: Listen! Someone (knock) at the door. → is knocking
Temporary: I (learn) Arabic these days. → am learning
Future plan: We (go) to the beach tomorrow. → are going
Negative: They (not watch) the movie now. → aren't watching
Question: Why you (cry)? → are you crying
