Dear JAMBITES,Let me clear you all on the issue of CUT OFF MARK. Because,

I just realized that so many JAMBITES don't know much about cut off mark.Thats why, you will see someone going for a competitive course with 200 as JAMB score and he or she will be happy,after all ,the university will definitely NOT cut more than 200.

See,as a university aspirant, it's important to know that "cut-off mark" is not just one fixed number. There are actually different types of cut-off marks, and each plays a unique role in your admission journey.

Let me break the different TYPES of CUTOFF MARKS down for you.Number 3 is the most Important.

1. JAMB General Cut-off Mark.

This is the minimum score set by JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) for all universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria.

For universities, it's usually around 140–180

For polytechnics, it might be 120–180

Note that,this JAMB general cut off mark is just the baseline. It doesn't guarantee admission. It only means you’re qualified to apply to institutions.

2. Institutional Cut-off Mark.

Each school sets its own cut-off mark above JAMB’s general minimum, depending on its standards, popularity, and competition.

For Example:

UniJos or UNN might set 200 as their cut-off mark

ABU might use 180

A private university may accept 160.

So even if JAMB says 160 is okay, the school may demand more than 160 But they can't Cut LESS than 160.

3. Departmental Cut-off Mark.

This is the minimum score you need to gain admission into a specific course or department in a university or polytechnic.

It is more important than the general school cut-off because it determines if you can study the course you applied for.

How is it decided? Each department looks at:

1. The number of students applying for that course

2. The number of available slots (admission spaces)

3. How well students performed in JAMB (UTME) and Post-UTME.

Let me give you an instance,

Let's say you applied to study Nursing at UNN.

-- 1,000 students also applied

-- The school only has 100 spaces for Nursing

-- Many students scored high marks in JAMB and Post-UTME

Because of this tight competition, the department may set a high cut-off mark like 298.

Now imagine another course like Animal Science,

-- Only 200 students applied

--The department has 150 slots

-- Most of the students didn’t score very high

They may set the departmental cut-off at 190.

So, the point is, Even if the school’s general cut-off mark is 180, the departmental cut-off is what really decides if you will be admitted into your specific course.

Not this just an example, General Jamb cut off mark for this year has not yet been announced till after the policy meeting coming up May 11th, 2026

1. How would I know when the NYSC Registration Portal is open?

It is not being done in secret, once the registration portal is opened the news will be everywhere.

2. Are there accredited centers for the NYSC online registration?

Yes

Locate an accredited cafe for your online registration.

You can't register anywhere.

3. Which e-Mail address should I use during registration?

You can use any e-mail address, but Gmail is better and recommended by NYSC. It’s not advisable to use Yahoo mail because of delay in getting confirmation code

4. Can I use the Gmail I have before or should I create another one?

You can use your previous email but make sure you know the login password.

5. Can I do the registration with my smart phone?

No, you can't complete registration with your Smart phone you can start but you can't complete it.

Visit an accredited cafe as explained before

6. Can I use another person’s phone number to register?

No! Make sure you use your active Nigerian phone number. It has to be your phone number.

7. Can someone do the thumbs printing for me?

No! You must do it by yourself. If it is rejecting your fingers, keep trying until it accept it. Use spirit or water to clean your hands before trying again if you are having difficulties

8. How is the choosing of state of choice look like?

You can't choose the states you want NYSC will only ask you to select states you've visited.

9. Will I submit my BVN during registration?

No, BVN is not required during registration but you will need it in camp for opening of your allowance account.

10. Must the name I used on my school documents match with the on BVN

Yes, if does not match, go to your Bank and update your BVN to make it match; if not you may have problem opening allowance account in NYSC orientation camp.

11. Does registering on the first or second day the Portal opened determined where I will be posted?

No, but it is important to register on time so that you would not be among left over's that will be pushed to another stream or batch.

12. Must I pay to NYSC during registration?

Yes

For online registration and to the cafe man for workmanship 7000 to 7500 depending on your location

13. Do I need a passport photograph for NYSC registration?

Emphatically, Yes! The background color must be white.

14. Can I do online registration if my school has not uploaded their Senate list?

No! Your school has to upload Senate list first.

15. If I don’t see my name on the senate list, what should I do?

Once you name is not on the senate list, complain to your Institution, they are responsible for uploading of senate list.

16. My name on JAMB is different from the one my school used in mobilizing me, will it be a problem to me?

Yes, it is a problem! If the one with JAMB is the error one, then go to JAMB for correction but if the one with your Institution is the error, go to your Institution for correction.

17. Is Medical certificate of fitness compulsory?

Yes, it is needed in camp for physical registration, but if you wish to redeploy on medical ground, then you also need to obtain Medical report.

18. Should Medical Certificate of Fitness be handwritten or typed?

Yes, it is possible!

20. Does NYSC request for O’level in orientation camp?

No, except for foreign trained graduates who are required to produce original of all documents uploaded during online registration.

21. Is it compulsory for my name to be on the JAMB matriculation list before I will be mobilized?

Yes, your name must be there; and if your name isn't there contact admin to rectify that for you but for foreign trained graduates, they don’t need such.

22. Is the original ND result required in camp for Polytechnic graduates?

Yes, but if you don’t have the original, please go to camp with the statement.

23. How do I correct spelling mistakes in my name?

Yes, there is provision for you to apply for changes of name on the dashboard when you have successfully registered

24. How do I correct wrong date of birth?

This can be corrected from your dashboard using your WAEC details and WAEC verification pin

26. How do I correct wrong course of study?

This can also be corrected from your dashboard

27. How do I correct wrong class of study degree?

On your dashboard

29. Are we going to be given pillows and foam in camp?

You will be given mattresses without pillows, however, you can buy pillow from Mammy market.

30. If I go to camp with a mosquito net, and I was given upper bunk space, where will I get tent poles?

You will meet the ones left by previous Corps members or you can go with some nails but sure they don’t see at the gate but they will seize it from you.

31. I heard that sometime, Corpers will be given Condoms to do it, is true?

NO, Condoms may be given to you during HIV sensitization CDS in camp but not for you to do it in camp. If caught in that act, you will be decamped Immediately

32. I hear about camp thieves, how can one do laundry without losing ones clothes

Use temporary marker to write your name on all your properties. doing that would help to deter camp thieves.

33. Admin Debbs, are there barbers or saloon for ladies in camp?

Yes, there are barbers. But for girls, I advice you plait your hair before coming because soldiers wont give you time for your hair.

34. Are there dry cleaners in orientation camp?

Yes, you will see many of them, and they can Iron your cloths as well.

35. Is attending churches on Sunday compulsory?

No! But there is church and mosque in camp

36. What are the best way to safeguarding one’s phones and money?

Your waist bag, make sure you always tie it around your waist even when sleeping.

37. Are guys allowed to visit female hostels?

No! Don’t go near there, the same thing applicable to female, don’t go near boys hostel. Not try am o

38. What is the best way to safeguarding one’s clothes?

Buy padlock, and always use it to lock your luggage.

39. Can I go to camp a day before the opening date?

Yes, it is allowed especially if you are posted to far place.

40. I’m a good instrumentalist, can I go to camp with my guitar or piano?

Yes, it is allowed

41. Can I go to camp with my spouse?

NO, unless both of you are deployed to the same state

42. I have car, motorcycle and bicycle. Can I go to camp with any of them?

No, it is not needed.

43. If am assigned to a particular bank during account opening, must I open account with that bank?

Yes, Open account with any bank assign to you in camp .

44. How many days would I stay in camp?

21 days only

44. Are pregnant and nursing mothers allowed in camp?

Yes, but they won’t be allowed to lodge in camp like other otondo. They will stay off-camp, and be going to camp for their registrations.

45. Are there ATM stand in NYSC orientation camp?

Yes

You'll get POS stand in camp, I'll advise you go with lot of cash because POS charges there is something else

46. When does parade start in the morning?

As early as 4:30am/5:00am, but you are required to wake up around 4:00/4:30am, and then use 30 minutes to brush teeth and dress up.

47. Will they allow me to cook in camp?

No! NYSC will take care of your food, but you can buy “mama put” from Mammy market if your are not OK with NYSC food.

48. Can I go to camp with garri to soak?

Yes, it is allowed.

49. Will soldiers beat or shoot us if we are in orientation camp?

No, soldiers are not permitted to shoot or beat any one in the orientation, they can only give you military punishment like juggling, squatting etc.

50. Is laptop allowed in camp?

No, don’t come with it.

51. I heard that NYSC is a scam, how true is that?

NYSC is not a scam, don’t mind those trying to paint it black.

52. JAMB gave me Admission but my school changed the course

You'll do JAMB Regularization

*NYSC AGE CALCULATION 2025*

▶️ It's no longer news that you will not be deployed if you are above 30 years as at when you finished from school but rather be issued *NYSC exemption letter*

*HOW TO CALCULATE THE AGE*

▶️ CASE 1:
SOLOMON date of birth is December 5th 1990 and SOLOMON graduated from his school on December 4th 2020, in this case SOLOMON is good and eligible to go for NYSC at any age he wants to. He finished school less than 30yrs.

▶️CASE 2:
SOLOMON graduated December 6th 2020, SOLOMON will be given exemption letter due to the fact that his above 30 years of age for a day before graduation from his institution.

*N.B:*
▶️ Date of graduation from your institution is when the final result was approved by your school governing body *i.e* the School senate body

*WHICH DATE OF BIRTH IS USED FOR NYSC MOBILIZATION?*

▶️ Your JAMB date of birth will be used to mobilise you

▶️ *But if your JAMB age is above 30 years and you have WAEC result that the age is below 30 YEARS, don't panic you will use the WAEC for the correction of your date of birth after/during NYSC online registration*

*JAMB Announces Date for Screening Underage UTME Candidates📌📌📌*

*The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed September 22–26, 2025, for the special screening of over 500 candidates below the age of 16 who excelled in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).*

*According to the board, the exercise will be conducted simultaneously in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri by a technical committee established to assess the readiness of these young candidates for higher education. Lagos will host 397 candidates, Owerri 136, and Abuja 66.*

*Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, explained that the process is aimed at identifying only the most exceptional and well-prepared underage students, noting that similar practices exist in other countries. He disclosed that out of the 41,027 underage UTME candidates this year, more than 40,000 did not meet the initial criteria for shortlisting.*

The assessment will feature subject-specific tests and a short oral interview. The committee will also verify WAEC results for some candidates before interviews take place.

Of the 1.95 million candidates who sat for UTME this year, 599 scored above 300 but did not meet the 16-year age requirement set by the Ministry of Education. JAMB’s guidelines stipulate that underage candidates must have at least 320 in UTME, 80% in post-UTME, and a minimum of 80% in WAEC or NECO in one sitting to be considered.

Four universities — Air Force Institute of Technology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, University of Jos, and Osun State University — have already stated they will not admit underage students under any circumstances.
