The president here is implying that COVID cases are deliberately misreported by hospitals with inflated numbers in order to make a profit. Not only is this idiotic right off hand, but it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how said money is “made.” When someone is treated for COVID-19, there are more supplies and personnel needed, different equipment that’s not typically available on a large scale is needed (ventilators), and so on. So it’s not that an MD will hand over a slip with “COVID” written on it in return for a fat check. This just covers additional costs, and barely, for much-needed resources. Secondly, studies have shown throughout history, and during this pandemic, numbers of cases and fatalities are vastly underestimated.
