Who else has children who collect shells everywhere they go?!
We always come home from the beach with pockets and bags full of shells. So instead of leaving them in a bucket somewhere we turned them into this colourful shell and bead mobile!!!
We found shells with little holes already in them. Then we tied wool through each shell and used them as the weight at the bottom of each strand.
Next came the fun bit. Threading on loads of colourful beads.
We made each strand a different length and used whatever colours the children fancied. No pattern needed. Just lots of colour and creativity.
Once all the beads were threaded we tied each strand onto a piece of wood. Driftwood would look lovely too if you find some at the beach.
Then we added wool to the top and hung our shell mobile in the garden.
Such a simple summer holiday craft and a lovely way to use all those shells children collect. It is also brilliant for fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, colour choices and pattern making.
Every shell and bead mobile will look completely different too. Totally original and made from their own little beach treasures.

I can’t lie… I am completely obsessed with my dye garden
A dye garden… what even is that?! 😄
It is a garden grown to make natural colour from petals, leaves, roots and stems. Nature inspired art in its truest form.
These are plants that have been used for centuries for natural dyeing, making ink and creating pigment. Long before synthetic dyes, nature gave us colour.
Somewhere along the way, we forgot that.
I met the incredible last year and went to one of her workshops, and I have honestly not stopped thinking about it since. Something just clicked.
So now I am growing a dye garden at home and at school, and turning those plants into plant dye and ink for my art lessons.
Because I want children to see it with their own eyes. That a marigold head can turn fabric golden. That plants and nature are more powerful than we realise. That art does not just come from a packet or a paint pot.
For me, this is about so much more than colour. It is slow living. Nature based learning. Watching something grow. Caring for it. Waiting for it. Then turning it into something beautiful and useful.
It feels like eco art, nature craft and a little bit of magic all at once.
Nature and creativity have always belonged together. We are just remembering that.
