What a weekend!

Dirigierakademie London 2026 was a fantastic success, bringing together conductors from all over the world to learn from one another, and from our tireless and inspiring teacher, Maestro Neil Thomson.

Over two intensive days we worked with both a chamber ensemble and a chamber orchestra, exploring works by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Debussy, and Strauss. The course culminated in a full day dedicated to Copland’s Appalachian Spring, a fitting and inspiring finale to an unforgettable weekend of music-making.

Our London course remains a real favourite for us, working in the wonderful National Opera Studio alongside musicians from some of the finest orchestras in the world.

We can’t wait to be back next year!

The first day of our upcoming London course will be dedicated to core works of the orchestral repertoire—masterpieces that pose some of the most significant technical and musical challenges for conductors.

Participants will explore these works in depth through specially commissioned piano sextet arrangements from .musica. In these arrangements, the string players perform from the original orchestral parts, while the piano assumes the roles of the woodwinds, brass, and timpani. This creates an ensemble that responds to conducting gesture in a manner closely resembling a full orchestra, while maintaining an intimate and accessible setting that maximizes both artistic and educational value.

Conducting in silence is a true test of your knowledge of a piece. With no sonic feedback from the orchestra you've only got your own inner conception of the piece to fall back on.

At Dirigierakademie we believe that personal practice in silence is a vital part of the preparation process, especially for young conductors, and it is also an excellent teaching tool. With no ensemble it's possible to go into much more detail on aspects of technique, style, and interpretation, without wasting students' valuable podium time.

Dirigierakademie Toronto will begin with a session of silent conducting, providing an opportunity to for participants to think in detail about their technique before we move into working with ensemble.

A hallmark of the Dirigierakademie approach is our use of arrangements for string quintet and piano. While many conducting masterclasses use piano 4-hands arrangements for teaching, pianists respond very differently to orchestral musicians and so make a poor substitute for the orchestra. Using bespoke arrangements from Piccolo Musica we provide a more realistic teaching environment, helping students to learn about working with string players, and be as prepared as possible for the orchestra day, while still keeping the participation fee as low as possible.

At Dirigierakademie Toronto in July we will be using three arrangement from Piccola Musica on the second day of our course. Check our website (link in bio) for more details or to apply.

We’re very excited to announce our next conducting masterclass with Maestro Neil Thomson this coming February.

On this short course participants will have the opportunity to work with some of London’s finest musicians on a selection of major repertoire pieces in an intimate chamber ensemble setting. On the second day we will focus on Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks and finish with a video analysis session, reflecting on the experiences of the orchestra session.

Come join us with Neil for the first Dirigierakademie London in February 2025. See the link in our bio for more information.

We had a blast in Toronto!

Our first conducting masterclass in North America was a major success, thanks to the wonderful conductors, musicians and our instructor Matthew Lynch✨

Our conductors worked with ensembles that gradually increase in size: piano 4hands, string quartet & piano, and final day with full orchestra. Watching them grow and improve everyday was incredibly gratifying, and we are grateful to be a part of their journey.
