Rest isn't just sleep. Dr. Alicia Newsome breaks down four kinds of rest we tend to ignore: sensory, emotional, spiritual, and physical rest.

Ahead of her new book Worthy of Rest, she joins The Wellness Docket to talk about why high performers (lawyers included) feel guilty for slowing down, and what actually helps. Dr. Alicia Newsome

New episode. 🎙️

Episode 15 of The Wellness Docket is live tomorrow. In this clip, Dr. Alicia Newsome discusses the the symptoms women often try to push through. She uses a check-engine-light analogy that I took away with me after the discussion. I said, "you have the best analogies!"

I'll admit it: I went into this episode a little (more than a little actually) out of my depth on perimenopause. Yes, you read that correctly! But I came out of this discussion with a new appreciation for what women go through.

In the next episode of the Wellness Docket, Dr. Alicia Newsome described it as a backpack: every toxin, every skipped meal, every bad night's sleep is like another rock a woman is carrying up a mountain during perimenopause. One of my comments to her was: "you have the best analogies." There was some laughter, some uncomfortable moments and a lot of learning on my part! I even started a Venn diagram to keep it all straight!

If you are someone going through perimenopause or supporting someone going through this, check out the next episode of the Wellness Docket, coming on August 15, 2026.

Episode 14 of The Wellness Docket is live. 🎧

Julia Belanger was called to the New Brunswick bar this year; a mother of four, access to justice advocate, and mental health champion in the profession. She lost her mother mid-clerkship, was diagnosed with ADHD in law school, and has some thoughts on what "success" actually needs to look like.

Building a Legal Career Without Sacrificing Your Life: Julia Belanger on Grief, ADHD, and Redefining Success. Check it out here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Have you ever tried to "get through" grief on a schedule?

Julia Belanger did: grief counselor, a plan, a timeline. Then she learned, four months after losing her mother, that grief doesn't follow a plan.

Tomorrow's episode of The Wellness Docket follows her personal story: articling while grieving, a late ADHD diagnosis, and redefining what a successful legal career actually looks like.

Thanks to Julia for taking the time to speak with me.

"I stopped eating. I couldn't sleep for four days. The only thing I could keep down was blueberries."

That's how Dean Michael Marin of UNB Law describes what an anxiety episode looked like for him. He was studying for the New York Bar, freshly hired at a Wall Street firm, and convinced he was a fraud who was about to be exposed.

In Episode 13 of The Wellness Docket, Dean Marin shares how anxiety followed him for decades before he understood what it actually was. He also shares how a therapist helped him see that the "freak out and succeed" cycle he thought was his superpower was actually holding him back.

His story, and what he learned from it, is one of the most honest and relatable conversations we've had to date.

Sometimes I have so much fun recording episodes of the Wellness Docket that I forget that I am even kind of doing work and taking up time. This was one of those episodes. Dean Michael Marin (Dean of Law at the University of New Brunswick Law School) and I had a wide-ranging conversation that ended with a story about his first court appearance. I thought to myself, "I probably have a dozen or more similar stories" and it's so much fun to tell these stories and find moments of levity about the practice of law!

The rest of this story reminded me of the best parts of practice: when you are sitting in a room with your office colleagues and they ask you "how did that one go?" There's always so much to learn and so much to appreciate about the workings of the justice system, even when it is admittedly not always so perfect.

I can't wait to share this next episode of the Wellness Docket, coming out on Monday, June 15, 2026!

My guest blog post for the Lawyers with Depression website is up today. It's based on a presentation I gave at the Law Society of New Brunswick Mental Health and Wellness Symposium last week and includes 5 mental health tips from The Wellness Docket through a baseball lens.

Thanks to Dan Lukasik for asking me to write this post! It went through three drafts before I trusted myself enough to finish it.
