Good Morning Families,
Woodstock Child Care Inc. recognizes it sits on the unceded territory of the Wəlastəkewiyik. We recognize the Wəlastəkewiyik people lived here before us and keep living here, along side us. As part of our Truth and Reconciliation journey, Woodstock Child Care Inc. will be making a donation to Gignoo Transition House Inc., an Indigenous Women’s Support Centre. Gignoo has been empowering and protecting Indigenous women and children in New Brunswick since 1993. Gignoo means “our home” in the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey languages. Gignoo is the only non-profit Indigenous women’s shelter in NB serving Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, Passamaquoddy and other Indigenous women and children, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Should any families want to contribute to our donation as part of their own acts of Truth and Reconciliation, we would gladly accept email money transfer and provide a charitable donation receipt in return. Throughout the day on September 30th, we will take time to pause, reflect, honour, and educate. We recognize the ongoing hardships endured by Indigenous people and vow to continue showing our support, not only on September 30th, but all the days of the year.

Stealing close to $24,000 from a nonprofit daycare could earn a woman time behind bars.
Carrie Brewer, 45, of Route 560 in Upper Woodstock was in provincial court Aug. 8 to be sentenced on a charge of theft from Woodstock Childcare Inc.
Brewer pleaded guilty to the charge in April.
Court heard that Brewer was employed in 2014 as the managing administrator for the daycare, a position she'd held since 2009 that required her to handle the daycare's finances and collect payments from parents.
Crown prosecutor Karen Lee said the theft was uncovered following a regular board meeting on Aug. 19, 2014.
"It appeared that everything was in good order," Lee said of the finance documents presented during the meeting.
However, the next day, board chairwoman Marissa Pelkey received a call from the daycare's bank saying that wasn't the case, court heard.
Lee said Pelkey was told the daycare's finances were "in dire straits." Its overdraft had been used up, and the organization was in danger of being unable to meet payroll that week.
Two days later, Pelkey confronted Brewer, the prosecutor said, and when Brewer was asked at one point how much had been taken, she responded, "I don't know."
Court heard that in a letter Brewer wrote to the board on Aug. 25, 2014, she took responsibility for the theft, writing, "The biggest problem is me," and she described the theft as an "in-the-moment decision."
Lee said the total amount stolen was determined to be almost $24,000. Court heard one parent submitted payments via e-transfers, and since the daycare wasn't set up to receive them, they were sent directly to Brewer. At no point were they deposited in the daycare's account, Lee said.
On Aug. 29, 2014, Brewer provided the daycare with a check of $5,000, which Lee said should count toward restitution. When Brewer was dismissed from her position, court heard, the rest of her pay and vacation pay were withheld. That should also be counted toward restitution, Lee added.
The prosecutor said similar cases of employee theft resulted in jail time anywhere between six months and a year. However, if exceptional circumstances are proven, a conditional sentence could be an option, she noted.
"Just looking at the pre-sentence report, I don't think it falls under an exceptional circumstance," Lee said.
Defence lawyer Peter Crocco argued his client was an "exceptional person" who has made efforts to make restitution. He said an additional $9,000 would be available to be paid toward restitution.
Judge William McCarroll reserved his decision to Sept. 5.

HUGE NEWS! As of today we are thrilled to share that Woodstock Childcare Inc. Has now become a Designated New Brunswick Early Learning Centre! This is a provincial initiative in the childcare sector and it will ensure that families will benefit from affordable, accessible, inclusive and high quality early learning and childcare services.
Parents and guardians that have children attending a designated centre may benefit from the Designated Centre Parent Subsidy. This will assist families with financial support to help pay the costs of early learning childcare.
The Parent Subsidy results in two outcomes:
1. No family in New Brunswick will pay more than 20% of their gross annual family income to cover childcare costs while their child is attending an early learning centre. This increases support for families with multiple children under five years of age.
2. Free daycare for preschool aged children for families with a gross annual income under $37,500 attending a New Brunswick early learning centre, regardless of location and fee charged by the operator.
For more information visit www.gnb.ca/earlyNB and you can access the Parent Portal and check the Parent Subsidy Estimator to see if you may be eligible.
