A Parent’s Guide to Music Lessons
Helping Your Child Discover the Joy of Music
As parents begin choosing activities for their children, I hope you’ll consider giving your child the gift of a music education.

After 32 years of teaching piano and voice, I have watched hundreds of children grow, not just as musicians, but as confident, disciplined, creative young people. While not every child will become a professional musician, every child can benefit from learning music.

Research continues to show that music education strengthens memory, concentration, problem-solving, coordination, perseverance, creativity, and self-confidence. Just as importantly, it gives children an expressive outlet that can bring them joy for a lifetime.

Start at the Right Time
For piano, most children are ready to begin between the ages of 5½ and 7, although every child develops at their own pace.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is your own commitment to the learning process. Young children are rarely able to decide whether they should commit to an activity that requires patience and practice. They often learn to love something after they begin experiencing success.

A Piano at Home is Essential
Learning piano without a piano to practice on is like taking swimming lessons without access to a pool.

A full-size digital piano with 88 weighted keys is an excellent place to start if an acoustic piano isn’t possible. Weighted keys allow students to develop proper finger strength and technique. When possible, upgrading to an acoustic piano later is ideal.

Choosing the Right Teacher
The relationship between teacher and student is one of the biggest factors in a child’s success.

Look for a teacher who:

• Has strong musical training and experience.
• Specializes in the instrument they teach.
• Has extensive teaching experience with children.
• Provides consistent weekly lessons.
• Encourages performance opportunities such as recitals.
• Builds a positive, encouraging relationship with students.
• Has teaching goals that match your family’s expectations.

The least expensive or most convenient option is not always the best investment. A skilled, caring teacher can inspire a love of music that lasts a lifetime.

Parents Make the Biggest Difference
The students who make the greatest progress almost always have parents who are involved.

You don’t need to know how to play the piano yourself. Simply attending lessons, understanding the weekly assignments, and encouraging regular practice can make an enormous difference.

Young children especially benefit from having a parent nearby during practice to help them stay focused and celebrate small successes.

Build a Daily Practice Habit
Consistency matters far more than marathon practice sessions.

Even 15 minutes of focused practice every day is far more effective than an hour the night before the lesson.

Choose a regular practice time each day and make it part of your family’s routine.

Effective practice includes:

• Working on small sections.
• Correcting one problem at a time.
• Playing slowly and accurately.
• Listening carefully.
• Practicing consistently throughout the week.

What to Expect
Learning an instrument is a journey. There will be exciting weeks, frustrating weeks, breakthroughs, and plateaus. This is completely normal.

A good teacher will challenge students, correct mistakes, and encourage steady improvement. Children often surprise themselves by accomplishing things they once believed were impossible.

Progress comes through patience, encouragement, and consistent effort not through natural talent alone.

Music is About More Than Music
Very few children take lessons because they plan to become professional musicians and that’s perfectly okay.

Music lessons teach perseverance, responsibility, goal setting, confidence, discipline, creativity, and the satisfaction that comes from mastering something difficult.

Whether a child studies music for two years or twenty, the lessons they learn reach far beyond the piano bench.

The gift of music is one that stays with them for the rest of their lives.

Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, confidence, and lifelong benefits that a music education can provide.

Voice Lessons for Teens & Beginners in Wolfville

I’m currently welcoming a small number of new students into my voice studio this season.

If your teenager loves to sing (in the car, in their room, or on stage!) but isn’t quite sure where to start, I would be delighted to help them find their voice in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

Many of my students begin with little or no experience. Lessons are tailored to each individual, whether they’re interested in musical theatre, classical music, or simply building confidence.

With over 30 years of teaching and performing experience, I focus on helping students develop healthy vocal technique while enjoying the process of making music.

I especially enjoy working with teenagers who are just starting out.

I also offer audition preparation and performance opportunities throughout the year.
