This mother knew it eventually. But in those early hours — alone, exhausted, not producing enough milk, she didn't.

This video from the Finding Formula: Confronting Insecurities project features mothers’ breastfeeding challenges during the height of a formula shortage.

These were private troubles that are also public issues.

Producing breastmilk is one way to protect babies from going hungry, but it is not always possible or easy – especially when families are stressed by income constraints and struggling to put food on the table.

35% of survey participants in the Finding Formula: Confronting Insecurities project sacrificed their own basic needs to make sure their child had food. Nearly half worried about running out of formula. 1 in 4 actually ran out and couldn't get more. 1 in 5 fed their child something they didn't want to. 18% stretched or skipped feeding times.

When the price of formula went up, stores put it behind locked cages. Baby formula is one of the most stolen food products in Canada.

As one participant in the Finding Formula: Confronting Insecurities survey put it, “if someone is stealing formula, it's because it's their last resort. That's not a theft problem. That's a food access problem. And locking the shelf doesn't fix it.”

Half of the ethnography participants in the Finding Formula: Confronting Insecurities project were worried about running out of food. Nearly three quarters couldn't afford formula.

Not a few. Not the exception. Most of them.

These are caregivers in the first weeks and months of parenthood, already stretched thin in every direction, quietly doing the math and coming up short.

That means nearly half of the families surveyed were dealing with inadequate or unreliable access to food because of financial constraints.

This is one reality the Finding Formula project documents. Food security during the first 1000 days of life is critical for a healthy life trajectory. And it's why the work matters.

Inadequate breastfeeding support, expensive formula, and a high cost of living don't just create stress, they get in the way of families being able to feed themselves and their children.

None of these are new problems. But they compound. And the families absorbing that pressure rarely have anywhere to turn.
