We had such a fun filled day with .theatre who so kindly ran a Creative Workshop PD session! We learned so much about how to integrate theatre exercises into the classroom ✨

Here’s our board game schedule for May. Every Thursday night at 6pm in the basement of Sem!

P.S. This week, the 24th is video game night. If you have a Nintendo Switch please bring it along as games are provided but consoles are expensive. Hope to see you there.

The Acadia School of Education is currently undergoing an accreditation review by the MPHEC (Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission) as are all university education programs in the province. This accreditation review is primarily to assess if the program is meeting the provincial requirements for accreditation of new teachers. Our program is designed carefully with the provincial requirements in mind, and we are required every few years to participate in this process.

The external accreditation panel will be visiting Acadia for a site visit from April1-3 and has requested a time to meet with graduated students (within the last five years) of the B.Ed. program. It will be a hybrid meeting (Teams and in-person) on Tuesday, April 1 from 4:15-4:45PM.

Starting April Board Game night will be going through theme nights, so if you’ve ever been curious now is the time to check it out! We meet every Thursday at 6pm in the basement lounge of Sem, but feel free to come when you can.

Meet Martin Andrew Morrison (PhD)! Martin is from the historical African Nova Scotian communities of Danvers and Southville. He is the proud father of six children and three grandchildren. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Acadia University. He is tremendously proud of the development and implementation of the African Nova Scotian Historical and Contemporary Perspectives course and his contributions to the Africentric Bachelor of Education Cohort (The ABC).
 
When asked what excites him about education, he said this; “Education offers a unique opportunity for teachers and students to come together as a community of learners to exchange ideas, understandings, and live experiences. These learning opportunities ought to seek to create understandings across our differences in the interest of being/becoming responsive to the multiple social, emotional, academic, and cultural needs of our students, their families, and our communities. When our educational institution seek to centre the dignity and humanity of their staff and students, they exemplify the best in all of us”.
 
I asked Martin what he has as a final message, and he said this; “’Until the lions have their own historians, the hunt will always glorify the hunter’ (African Proverb). Stories have both power and positionality; knowing who the narrative serves often tells you as much as the narrative itself. Stay curious and critical in the interest of the truth”.

Meet Emma Rowsell! She is from Mississauga, Ontario and she is part of the 16 month program here at Acadia in the elementary cohort! What she has enjoyed most about her time in the program is being on practicum. When asked about what she is looking forward to in her teaching career she said that she is most excited to meet her future students and building relationships with them! As well as what she can learn from her students.
 
As a final message she said, “don’t be afraid to take risks and try something new!”

Practicum is around the corner for pre-service teacher’s! Peer led practicum prep sessions will be happening between February 25th-March 20th to help address any questions, concerns, or guidance you may need 🍎

Welcome Dr. Janis Dawson as the new Clinic Coordinator at the Red Spruce Mental Health Centre.

Coming back home to Nova Scotia from Newfoundland, she brings a wealth of clinical supervision experience and expertise in One-At-A-Time (OAAT) Therapy.

The Red Spruce is up and running and Janis is quickly settling in to become a valuable member of the counselling team.

Sarah Walker is from Cape Breton Island and her teachables are Music and French! She is part of the 16 month B.Ed program here at Acadia in the secondary cohort.

What she has enjoyed most about the B.Ed program is the power of the cohort and the opportunity of practicums. She is most excited to work towards building safe learning environments for students and creating meaningful relationships with students!

As a parting message she shared this; “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better” - Dr. Maya Angelou.
