Thirteen years ago, Ali Asher walked into Mini U as a first time camper. That summer would begin a routine that would last for years to come.

What Ali remembers most is the feeling of waking up and being excited for summer camp. For her, the friendships, the community and the environment built around Mini U is what makes it feel so special.

“Mini U has impacted me far beyond camp,” says Ali. “As a camper, it impacted my self-confidence and relationship building skills… I’ve learned leadership skills that I’ll carry with me for life.”

Fast forward to today: Ali is in her second summer as a leader. This is a “full circle moment” for her.

Now on the other side of camp, Ali strives to create that same 🌟 magic 🌟 that is Mini U. It’s an opportunity for her to create those mini moments for her campers like she once had, while also learning to grow as a leader.

“It’s about watching campers come out of their shell and express confidence,” says Ali. “It’s rewarding to know I’m creating a safe environment for campers to grow and create lasting friendships.”

Even at the age of six, Sara Sapozhnikov knew she wanted to become a Mini U leader. Each day at camp was an exciting and dynamic experience that she looked forward to. She couldn’t wait to play a bigger part at camp.

“[Mini U] helped me build confidence and develop leadership skills,” says Sara, “I loved the friendships that I made and the positive energy everyone brought. I remember looking up to my leaders and hoping that one day I’d get to wear the blue shirt too”.

Fast forward to the present, this is Sara’s third summer working as a Mini U leader. She is thrilled to help the development of her campers, while simultaneously learning from each other.

“The campers have reminded me why I love Mini U and have taught me the importance of patience, creativity and creating an environment where everyone feels included,” she says.

Being part of a welcoming environment helps build a connection between Sara and her campers. Her curiosity in getting to know each child ensures that her campers know that she’s there to support where needed.

“Taking the time to encourage a camper, remember something about them, or simply make them smile can make a huge difference in their day… knowing I can make someone feel welcomed, supported and happy is the reason I love coming back every summer.”

That’s a wrap on our first year of Made for U at Mini U Summer Camp! ⭐️💙✨😊

When we recognized a gap in traditional camp environments for children needing complex, one-on-one diverse support, we knew we had to build something tailored specifically to them. Out of that vision, Made for U was born!

A huge thank you to:

Full Circle Community clinicians and our very own UM Master of Occupational Therapy students for bringing this brand-new program to life!

Freedom Concepts for providing adaptive bicycles that gave our campers so much joy and mobility.

Most importantly, thank you to our amazing campers and their families for trusting us as we build more inclusive spaces. We couldn’t do it without U!
