Title: “Observing the Influence of Environment on the Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are a key phase in the life-cycles of galaxies as the growth of a galaxy is intimately linked to that of it's central supermassive black hole. Using the latest suites of wide-field multi-wavelength observations it is possible to observe large populations of these objects in different settings. In doing so we are able determine how the galactic environment can influence the triggering and evolution of AGN and, by extension, the duty-cycle of the host-galaxy itself. In this colloquium I show how galaxy mergers can produce an AGN, how galaxy clusters and large groups can prevent AGN from forming, and even how neighbouring galaxies can act to hide the effects of an AGN.

Using supercomputers, math, and way-out-there thinking to study the big bang There is a menu of theories to choose from for how the universe began, the most popular being the big bang option where every tiny part of every particle to ever exist was squeezed into a dot so compa...
