David Naylor (CMU '26) is never sure what his workday will look like when he starts his shift. "It can be anything from giving out a pair of socks to reviving somebody with naloxone in the back alley," he says.

Naylor works at Union Gospel Mission, a non-profit organization that does community outreach as Christian ministry in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, a neighbourhood with some of the highest urban rates of addiction, homelessness, and poverty in Canada. While completing his Master's of Divinity at CMU, Naylor did a ministry-based research project how Christians understand addiction through textual research and interviews with UGM staff members.

"My research was concerned with how to equip ministers engaged in addiction care as unique contributors to the addiction field," he says.

Faculty at CMU are always conducting fascinating and incredible research projects outside of their classes. In recognition of Research Month at CMU, we talked to four CMU faculty members (Paul Dyck, Professor of English, Neil Weisensel, Associate Professor of Music, Anneli Loepp Thiessen, Assistant Professor of Music, and Chris Huebner, Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy) about what they have been researching lately.

"In late 2020, during my senior year of high school, I was certain that I wanted to become a dietitian. However, in late April 2021, I realized that I was not interested in pursuing a career in healthcare... I wanted to pursue a program where I would be able to express myself creatively, which is something I have always enjoyed, while still being able to build a successful career. After doing some research, I applied to the communications and media program at CMU, and it would turn out to be one of the best decisions I could make for myself."

In her myCMUlife Blog, 2026 CMU graduate Manuela Mariño Calixto reflects on her time as a Communications and Media student and gives four pieces of advice for those wanting to join the same program. Thoughtful and inspirational, Manuela's blog gives insight into how CMU supports students through small class sizes, friendly professors, and invigorating courses.

Behind any published academic paper is an army of research assistants (RAs) who help aggregate, organize and shape the research itself. At CMU, research assistant Rachel Neufeld and research coordinator Kayden Brown play an important role in the work being led by Dr. Heather Campbell-Enns, Canada Research Chair in Families and Aging and Associate Professor of Psychology. For Campbell-Enns, RAs are collaborators in the research process, not simply assistants completing assigned tasks.

"They are not just worker bees," she says. "The research is their work too."

From cleaning interview transcripts to coding qualitative data and helping identify emerging themes, RAs at CMU are deeply involved in projects examining dementia care and family caregiving. They get to help shape meaningful research that is doing more than building résumés, it's shaping how they see research, collaboration, and their future careers.

As part of Research Month at CMU, stories throughout May are highlighting the people, partnerships, and projects shaping research across the university.
