We are honoured to present our third Common Unity guest, Jonathan Meikle, and we are so happy to have his thoughts and reflections on this year's topics!
"Where I am today in my healing, is a product of my community being there for me when I needed help. I do not regret my past. It is my past that has helped me remove the blindfold and has allowed me to recognize the greater mechanisms at play. An example of such mechanisms is colonialism."

We are honoured to present our second Common Unity guest, Angela Lavallee, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her voice as part of this project.
"Angela Lavallee is an Indigenous woman, mother, grandmother, post-secondary graduate, and active community member currently residing in Winnipeg. She is a certified focus therapist and provides focus sessions to women and men who are in need of healing support. She is also the founder of Soles on Fire: a run to bring awareness, prevention, and intervention on violence against women and girls and most importantly to celebrate and honour life."

We're kicking off Common Unity with MSCSA Community Liaison, Keziah Toews! Keziah is championing this new role within the MSCSA that is focused on building connections between the MSCSA, the broader Winnipeg community, and beyond.
Below is an excerpt from Keziah's submission to Common Unity, where she reflects on this year's themes of "Resilience and Connections"
"Being a resilient person does not mean that problems in life disappear.
It means that there is an understanding of how things work in life and that understanding helps the individual process their problems.
Resiliency does not 'water down' emotions.
Being resilient does not mean that a person does not feel the same levels of grief, hurt and pain. Instead, they develop the tools to better work through those feelings.
Everyone can be resilient.
Although there are biological factors that contribute to our own levels of resilience, resiliency can be achieved through one's life experiences. It does not have to take a traumatic event to do this.
Resilience does not always look like survival.
The quality of resilience is expressed in many different ways, depending on the person. For some, it may mean focusing one's energy on other things after a crisis... "

Every year the MSC Student Association holds an annual community event called Common Unity. This event seeks to highlight community voices from all walks of life on an annual theme, in efforts to build connections and facilitate community growth through exploring the perspectives and lived experiences of others.
This year, the pandemic has forced us to get creative as we cannot host the event as we normally would. Instead, the MSCSA is launching a community web-series, where active members of the community and their work will be highlighted. Every month, individuals will submit a write up or a video with a reflection encompassing the themes of resilience and connection. These will be hosted on the website for everyone to view at their leisure.
Link below for direct access to the Common Unity webpage. We hope you will find something to take away from each highlighted participant to help build and evolve your own understanding of what it means to be resilient and share connections.
