your gi takes a beating and lives on hygiene. wash it right and it lasts years. wash it wrong and it shrinks, fades, or smells.

the simple routine: wash after every session, cold or warm water (never hot, that is what shrinks it), turn it inside out, and air dry. if it has gone sour, half a cup of white vinegar in the wash neutralizes the odour without wrecking the fabric.

the full care guide:

How to wash your BJJ gi so it lasts and stays fresh: water temperature, air drying, beating the smell, and avoiding shrinkage. A simple care guide.

gi vs no-gi: which should a beginner start with? the short answer is try both.

gi means the kimono-style uniform with grips on the fabric, which slows the game down and rewards clean technique. no-gi is a rashguard and shorts, faster and more athletic, and a lot cooler in a Winnipeg summer.

most well-rounded students train both, and each makes the other better. if you only do one to start, pick the class that fits your schedule and just begin.

πŸ₯‹ Back to school, back to the mats.

We are running our Back to School starter through Labour Day. It is 70% off and it covers the two things that stop most people from starting: the uniform and the first month.

πŸŽ’ What you get:
βœ… Your uniform included
βœ… Your first month of training
βœ… Beginner classes, every day, gi and no-gi
βœ… Kids classes for ages 9 to 13

You do not need experience. You do not need to be in shape first. Nobody is going to throw you into sparring on your first day.

Socius is a hobbyist-first room. Most of the people on our mats have jobs and kids and are here because it is the best hour of their day, not because they are chasing a medal. Our kids class runs the same way. The older kids look after the newer ones, and that is taught, not hoped for.

πŸ’ͺ What people actually get out of it:
βœ… A skill you keep
βœ… Conditioning that shows up without a treadmill
βœ… Confidence under pressure, which for the kids carries straight into school
βœ… A room where people know your name

Your first class is free. Come see the room before you decide anything.

what age can kids start BJJ? our structured kids classes run ages 8 to 13, and the gi is included.

but the honest answer is readiness over age. if your child can follow basic instructions and likes to play and move with other kids, they are usually ready. age groups are split so an 8-year-old is not lost in a class built for 13-year-olds.

if your child is outside that range, reach out. we would rather point you to the right fit than push them into a class that is not built for them.

how often should a BJJ beginner train? two to three classes a week is the sweet spot. that is enough for the techniques to stick and for you to see steady progress, without burning out.

the bigger truth: consistency beats intensity every time. two a week for a year beats five a week for a month.

the full breakdown:

How many times a week should a BJJ beginner train? Why two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for fast, sustainable progress.
