Join the UM ACA Student Chapter and the Association for Manitoba Archives on Tuesday, January 20th at 2:30 PM in 108 St. John’s College at the University of Manitoba for a lecture by Brian Carpenter.
Brian Carpenter is the Curator of Indigenous Materials at the American Philosophical Society’s (APS) Library & Museum, one of the oldest archives on the continent relating to Indigenous peoples. An archivist by training, he began working at the APS in 2008 on a six-year project to digitize and catalog all of the library’s 3000+ hours of audio recordings of Indigenous languages of the Americas. Since then he has worked with over 90 Native communities throughout the continent to enhance their access to archival materials at the APS, to receive guidance on ways to improve the accurate and relevant representation of the collections, and to promote uses beneficial to Indigenous communities’ priorities.
The lecture will explore the Indigenous archival collections held by APS, including those with connections to Manitoba, and will discuss how APS is working to promote and facilitate access to these collections for Indigenous communities.
All are welcome! We hope to see you there.
