Exciting News about our Temple Shalom Religious School!
Immediate Registration Required

We are delighted to announce that Temple Shalom is joining a huge new North America-wide online religious school this year, jointly offered by the Union of Reform Judaism and ShalomLearning. There is strength in numbers and we will be joining over 30 other Temples in this pilot initiative, as we push back against the pandemic and find new paths forward!

Here are the key points:
· Our children will meet and participate with students across North America in cohort classes of 4-10 students in an interactive setting with experienced ShalomLearning teachers.
· Classes are offered for Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 students.
· The curriculum’s emphasis is on “ethical living,” offered through a non-denominational lens.
· Each “year” is 18 sessions, one hour per week starting the week of October 10.
· Families can choose from one of four time slots per week: Two on Sunday and two on Thursday.
· Families must register through Temple Shalom who will forward the registrations to the URJ.
· The URJ requires that families must be members of Temple Shalom to access the program (this can be discussed separately with the Temple office or with Ruth.)
· Course cost: $325 USD per student. The Temple will cover the exchange to USD… you pay CA $ 325.00
· Immediate registration required! Contact Ruth Livingston asap if you have questions or to register: [email protected]; text 204-794-3654; phone 204-475-4768

March 2021 update

Right now all classes are conducted via Zoom. This includes a Wednesday Hebrew class where students are learning to both read and speak in Hebrew.

It is heartwarming to watch the progress that has been made and to hear the students speaking in Hebrew for most of the class time.

Sunday classes include a pre Bar/Bat Mitzvah class for grade 6 and 7 students where much of the focus centres around the weekly Torah reading. The discussions are often lively, informative and thought provoking.

A class for students in grades 1-5 is devoted to learning about the holidays and bible studies and tries to include a hands. on activity. Each class is currently 45 minutes in duration.

School Chair’s Message Nov/Dec 2020

Irma Penn School of Jewish Learning has met a few times in person but with the new reduced meeting-size rules re: Covid-19 and our concern for the safety of our students and teachers, we have decided to resume school via Zoom.

The Executive of the Board at Temple Shalom has recommended offering these classes until the end of December, at no charge. Donations to the school are of course welcome. If you are wanting to contribute, cheques should be made out to Temple Shalom Religious School.

September 1, 2020

Good day,

I wanted to introduce myself to the students of Irma Penn School and their parents, as well as students and parents interested in joining the school. My name is Bryan Hyman and I am honoured to be the new Chair of the school. I have two school age children and my son, Carson, was a participant in the B’nai Mitzvah class with Eileen Curtis this past school year.

For those not familiar with the school, the Sunday morning program focuses on Jewish holidays and traditions, Jewish History and Bible study, Israeli culture and music and crafts. Wednesday after-school classes focus on Hebrew language learning and include reading, writing, comprehension, speaking and singing with the goal of having students reading from the Siddur with confidence. The B’nai Mitzvah class provides an introduction to the blessings and songs to be performed at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and provides valuable lessons and insight to soon-to-be adults concerning Judaism in one’s daily life.

Classes will start in October and I will be in contact with parents of past students in the near future. The classes will be on Zoom until at least December 2020. Anyone with questions relating to the school or the classes offered may contact the office at 204-453-1625 or send an e-mail to [email protected].
