StudyUp Tip of the Week: Do Your Homework!
Some people don’t realize that even when you have left school, it doesn't mean that you will no longer have to do homework. For example, when searching for a job, you need to do more than simply look at the ads and listings posted by companies that are hiring. Performing a solid search of each company on your radar is highly recommended. Searching out the company can help in a couple of ways.
First and foremost, you can decide if any of the places are actually worth working for. A simple Google search can produce negative articles and employee complaints; both of which are red flags that you should take into consideration. Second, knowing all you can about a prospective employer will help you put the right foot forward when it comes to the interview stage. Questions such as “Why do you want to work here?”, and “Do you have any questions for me?” are famous for catching people who have not done their research on a given company.
Let’s face it. Doing the research shows the employer that you are serious and not afraid to do the necessary preparation. Being thorough will set a precedent for your future behaviour. More than ever, today companies are looking for long term prospects due to the high costs of training and orientation. Make sure you appear like someone worthy of a long term relationship! So, the next time you're gazing at those job ads, do a little more digging. Look deeper into the companies and do your homework. It will likely pay off in the end.

StudyUp Tip of the Week: Get Linked!
Whether you are a student searching for the perfect job, or a graduate trying to advance your current career, we all know a good online presence is essential in these modern times. Web pages and social networking sites can make, or even break a career. LinkedIn is a site that provides a way for aspiring students and professional people alike to expand their networking base.
In a nutshell, LinkedIn is a social networking service that allows members to connect with old friends and work colleagues on a professional level. Your LinkedIn profile acts as a mini resume of your accomplishments and work experience. They have a built in search engine that suggests connections for you with people from your geographical area, profession, workplace, and many other variables. Members can make contact with prospective colleagues, employers, and businesses from all over the globe.
Once you have built up enough connections, LinkedIn can become an especially useful tool for finding a new job. Through second and third degree connections created from your network, you can find out about opportunities that you would otherwise have not heard about. You can also follow companies that you may want to work for, and be super prepared when interview day rolls around. It's all FREE, so there should be nothing stopping you from getting yourself “Linked In” to the professional networking scene today!

StudyUp Tip of the Week: Get With Twitter!
Social Networking websites are quickly becoming a new path to employment for many students. Top executives admit to looking up and researching prospective job candidates at places like Facebook or LinkedIn. As it turns out, Twitter is actually a much better tool for job and career related networking, and if used correctly, it can lead to some very interesting career prospects. Twitter can help your career by hooking you up with other Twitter members who are interested in learning specific things about the profession you have chosen.
If you post useful information about your chosen career path on Twitter, people will find you based on that, and begin to follow you. Anything relevant to your profession that you can comment on, in a professional way, could be useful in gaining a Twitter following. Once you do get a good Twitter reputation, your tweets become highly anticipated, and the number of followers you have begins to multiply. This will come in very handy when you decide to enter the workforce full time.
Look, for keeping in touch with friends and family around the world, sites like Facebook do an excellent job. For career networking, you really need to consider Twitter. Don’t forget, by following other experts in your field, Twitter also allows you to keep up to date with new developments in your profession. All of this, and Twitter is free too. So......what are you waiting for, start tweeting your way to the top today!

StudyUp Tip of the Week: Freelancing is the Way to go!
Ever think of working for yourself? Wouldn’t it be nice to make your own schedule, and be your own boss? Even if you just devote a few hours per week to doing your own freelance work, it can quickly amount to some serious extra cash in your pocket. If you have a knack for drawing, writing, or anything that someone may value, then why not check out some of the many freelance sites that are available on the net?
Ifreelance.com, Elance.com, FreelanceSwitch.com are just a few examples of the great places where you can go to view job postings, discuss and learn about the freelance world, or even boast about your skills! You may have to start small and apply for several different projects before anything materializes. But, if you persevere and start making a name for yourself in the freelance sector you specialize in, the offers may just start pouring in.
Freelancing is not only a great way to earn some extra money. More importantly, it allows you to explore your interests and develop the talents that set you apart in the workforce. Think about all of the time you spend watching TV in the evenings, or surfing aimlessly on the internet. If you started freelance work only every second night for example, you would still have a huge advantage over other students that will be competing for the same jobs as you when you graduate. And hey, let’s be honest, how many students out there can honestly say they couldn’t use a few extra bucks!

StudyUp Tip of the Week: “I’ll be the One Asking The Questions Here!"
Want to find out all you can about an industry that is of interest to you? Why not schedule a few informational interviews with people that are actually working in the field? It’s true, such a thing does exist, and most reputable companies are equipped for this type of interview! Informational interviews are not only a very effective way to find out if an industry is one worth pursuing, they are also a useful networking tool for the day that you do cross over, and become a part of your chosen profession.
An informational interview is different from zn interview where you are seeking employment. You are there to learn, not to interview for a particular job. In an informational interview, you will be the one asking the questions. Make sure that your questions are good, and that you have thoroughly researched the company and person you will be meeting. If you make a memorable impression with this firm, you may make your employment search that much easier when school is done!
When the interview is complete, it is proper to leave your resume and contact details if you still feel the industry and the company suit you. Be sure to also send a thank you note to the person you met with for giving you their time. Bottom line - informational interviews cost you nothing but your time, and could lay the groundwork for your job search a few years down the road. It pays to know everything you can about something as important as your career. Knowledge is power after all!

Welcome back from summer holidays! What was the highlight of your summer? Here at StudyUp, we spent the summer coming up with an App that would help make your school life easier. We hope to have it ready for download in a few weeks. What are some of the features you think a StudyUp App needs to have?
07/16/2012
We are in the process of designing a FREE App for our users supporting IPhone / IPod / Ipad and Android. We want to know if you would find it useful to have a "Voice to Text" feature that would use your phone or mobile device to record your teacher or professor in class, and then have that recording automatically converted to text. Basically, that text would then be sent from your mobile device to your StudyUp profile, ready for you to look over and modify, before saving as your study notes for that class. Let us know if you think this would make your school life easier.

Remember the days when the first introduction an employer had to a prospective employee was via a resume? Of course we all know times have changed drastically since then. Resumes are still important, but what you may not realize is how a good, clean website can help take you to the next level of professionalism in the eyes of an employer.
That's right, maintaing a personal website is an excellent way for employers to see your talents. Your website can act as a portfolio for you and your abilities. It is a great place to post samples of your work and projects. Better yet, the cost to upkeep a website is minimal; with hosting costing less than 10 dollars per year.
Website templates are so easy to use these days that basically anyone who uses Facebook can handle creating and updating their own. Look, if just one other candidate in line for the same job has a well kept website, and you do not, you are instantly at a disadvantage. Plus, who knows, with a personal website live, you may just find job offers start coming to you!
