Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, Robson Hall's sense of community between students, faculty, and alumni is its defining feature. As the only law school in the province, we take our mandate to produce excellent lawyers seriously – classes with a small student-to-professor ratio, our own state-of-the-art building, and numerous opportunities for students to work with practicing lawyers and judges are just a few things that help us turn ambitious students into successful lawyers. For over a century we have graduated excellent lawyers who are experts in all areas of law. degree, and we specialize in Aboriginal legal issues, business law, and in human rights. These three focus areas of teaching and research are relevant globally, but are particularly germane to issues facing Manitoba and Canada.

Episode 7: More than a “pile of books” — The Librarian as Advocate: Realizing Human Rights within Prison Communities

In this episode of Footsteps, host Maddy Nowosad speaks with Kirsten Wurmann, who serves as program coordinator with the Manitoba Library and oversees the Prison Libraries Committee and University of Manitoba Master of Human Rights student Ege Kaymaz who is completing his MHR practicum under Kirsten’s supervision.

Together, they explore the vital role of libraries and librarians in advancing human rights within the prison environment through awareness, listening, relationship building, and resource development to help ensure incarcerated people can access books and information. Both guests reflect on how personal experiences, family influences and relationships have shaped their respective commitments to serving incarcerated people - a marginalized population whose lives and circumstances many of us, as Maddy points out, have limited opportunities to understand.

From Ege’s accessible resources explaining the Mandela Rules to Kirsten’s reflections on participant-led projects and relationships, the conversation considers what realizing human rights requires in practice - and the intergenerational inspiration, community and collective courage that sustain this very human work.

🎉 The UM Faculty of Law congratulates Tréchelle Bunn [JD/26], Chief of the Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation, Manitoba recipient of the 2026 Royal Society of Canada’s Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize.

Chief Bunn graduated from the UM Faculty of Law in 2026. She made history at 25, becoming the first woman and youngest person elected Chief of Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation. A dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights, she has spoken on national and international stages, including at the United Nations, and plans to use her law degree in lifelong service to her people.

The Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize is presented annually to a graduating law student in each of the law schools in Canada who is most likely to positively influence equity and social justice in Canada or globally upon graduation.

🧡🪶 On September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law encourages all faculty, staff and students to remember and reflect on our shared responsibility to learn about the history and continuing legacy of residential schools, to take time to honour the children who never returned home, and to recognize the ongoing work required to advance meaningful reconciliation.

This responsibility has particular significance within a Manitoba law school. Law has been used in causing the many harms of settlement, the dispossession of Indigenous peoples, and the suppression of Indigenous legal orders and cultural practices. But we can also leverage law towards constructive action and develop bridge-building opportunities in the interest of shared communities.

🧡 Today, the Faculty of Law, The Law Society of Manitoba and The Manitoba Bar Association are proud to host the 4th Annual Interdisciplinary Journal of Indigenous Inaakonigewin (IJII) Conference, focused this year on Indigenizing Manitoba Courts.

The conference brought together members of Manitoba’s judiciary, legal community, students and guests for important conversations about reconciliation, Indigenous perspectives in the justice system, and the difference between symbolic inclusion and meaningful structural change.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Lorena Sekwan Fontaine, Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for Academic Innovation. A graduate of the Faculty of Law Class of 2000, Dr. Fontaine is now a Professor and Department Head of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba, and is internationally recognized for her research on Indigenous language rights, residential school redress and the concept of “linguicide.”

Dr. Fontaine is being honoured tonight at UM’s Distinguished Alumni Awards celebration.

🚨 Registration is now open! Don’t miss our first Conflict Competency workshop on October 3!

Join us for Introduction to Conflict Competency, the mandatory foundational workshop that must be completed before taking any other workshops in the Desautels Conflict Competency Accelerator.

This foundational workshop introduces participants to the nature of conflict and the core concepts that shape how we understand and respond to it. Before learning what to do in conflict, participants learn how to see it: how conflict emerges, how it presents itself, and what may be happening beneath the surface. Participants will explore foundational conflict theory and frameworks, together with the range of approaches available for intervention—from informal interpersonal responses to formal legal processes. The workshop introduces the conflict intervention continuum and provides the foundation for the skills and strategies developed throughout the Desautels Conflict Competency Accelerator.

💼 Introducing the Desautels Conflict Competency Accelerator — practical conflict-resolution skills for legal practice and beyond.

Build the conflict skills legal practice now requires.
Open to JD, LLM, MHR and ITL students, as well as articling students connected to the Faculty of Law, the Accelerator provides practical training in negotiation, difficult conversations, conflict resolution and mediation-informed legal practice. Robson Hall staff are also welcome to participate. Students from other disciplines are encouraged to contact us regarding availability.

Participants can take individual workshops or build toward 40 hours of conflict competency and alternative dispute resolution training, with the opportunity to complete an additional 40 hours of professional mediation training delivered by legally trained mediation professionals and aligned with the pathway toward the Qualified Mediator (Q.Med) designation.

The Accelerator begins Saturday, October 3, 2026, with additional workshops offered throughout the academic year.

Workshop Fees:
