“No pain, no gain” always sounded a bit too dramatic to me. Sure, there will be some pains. But it’s not a requirement for anything.
I think it’s down to persistence and the direction you’re heading. The point I want to make is that besides strong will, which is hard to develop, what actually makes people keep going is something much simpler: enjoying the practice.
The gain is immediate, whenever you show up and do what you set out to do. It can be because you like the people around you, or just the activity itself. The understanding that occasionally hits you, or maybe it’s just your quality time away from other stuff. You’ll persist, carrying on even when there are bumps, delays, off days, weeks when everything feels slow.
Progress comes from coming back again and again, not from suffering through it.
Fun is underrated. It keeps you moving.

There’s something good about getting under the weather. It passes, and leaves me grateful for being healthy enough to practice Aikido.
Caught a cold on thanksgiving, missed a class and then another but now… I hope this reminder will last because we tend to take these things for granted. Being able to practice and connect with people, sweat, learn, breathe (without whizzing and caughing).
I’m still weak and slow but very thankful and there’s a long time until class on Wednesday. I’m going to get so much better, I’ll be flying!

First week back on the mats after summer break. You’d never guess I’m excited just by looking at me—but I am.
I look forward to every class, always planning and hoping I’ll manage to pass on just a little of what I find interesting, cool, fun, and deep about this art.
No new pics, so AI to the rescue.
In this image: someone rolling bad for no apparent reason. The thrower looks like he’s just standing there. Not looking at each other, smiling, interacting.. what is this ? Oh yes, artificial.
