The CHRR brings people & groups doing human rights research together - in & outside the U of M.

Established in 2012, the Centre for Human Rights Research (CHRR) brings together people and organizations – both within and outside the University of Manitoba – to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research capacity, create richer training opportunities for students, and facilitate the fusion of research-driven knowledge, public policy and intellectual debate on issues related to human r

ights and social justice. The centre aims to facilitate research that is both academically rigorous and accessible to the public. Human rights research and teaching has been identified by the University of Manitoba as one of its strategic priorities.

Congratulations to the Fighting for Sustainable Empowerment project for being featured at this year's Fighting Spirit Film Festival in London! 👏 The Fighting Spirit Film Festival: All Action Martial Arts aims to entertain and inspire people through martial arts cinema, promote martial arts culture, and recognise, connect, and support those who have chosen it as a career.

The Fighting for Sustainable Empowerment (FSE) Project, funded as a UM-SSHRC, aimed to develop and implement a pilot pedagogical model for the empowerment of newcomer students identifying as women through a University-based feminist karate program, which combines sports karate training and feminist theoretical classes. As a part of the project, women at the University of Manitoba gather to learn karate every Saturday night with Dr. Fabiana Turelli.

Together with participants, Dr. Turelli decided to create a film showcasing the project. The documentary project was a recipient of the CHRR’s 2024-25 Small Grants program, which helps University of Manitoba Faculty get new, interdisciplinary human rights research projects off the ground.

Check out this new chapter authored by CHRR affiliate Dr. Lucy Delgado (Faculty of Education ) on the newly released book, Metis Methodologies, under Fernwood Publishing. The chapter is titled "Research within Métis Community Work: Methodological tensions and possibilities in a Two-Spirit Michif research ethic".

Foregrounded by Métis epistemologies, ontologies, and axiologies, Métis Methodologies provides transformative frameworks for Métis research. Congratulations to editors Laura Forsythe and Jennifer Markides and all the contributors in the volume for publishing an important contribution to Métis research.

Join us on Tuesday, September 15 at 3 pm to come make posters for Miskwaagamiiwi-ziibi Water Walk! The workshop will be held in 108 St. John's College on the University of Manitoba - Fort Garry Campus. All are welcome to join.

We will have stencils created by Jaimie Isaac, pastels and paper for posters. If you’d like something smaller, you can use our button-making machine to create a custom button. If you can’t join the Water Walk, not to worry. You can wear your button in support of the walk and make extra posters and buttons for us to hand out.

Water Walks are based in Anishinaabe Ceremonial Water Teachings. We walk to honour all Nibi (water) and to share our good words, prayers, songs and intentions with the water spirits so that there will be healthy rivers, lakes and oceans for our ancestors and the generations to come.

What is oral history? 💬🔍

Oral history is conversation, but is not just a recorded conversation. Oral history is a method of historical and social scientific inquiry and analysis that includes life histories, storytelling, narratives, and qualitative research. Swipe to learn more ➡

In June 2026, the Centre for Human Rights Research hosted a webinar on oral history methodology with Dr. Janis Thiessen (University of Winnipeg). Created from this workshop, this infographic introduces oral history as a research method, including key definitions, steps, and procedures necessary to oral history.

This month's emerging researcher is Krista Pilz. Krista Pilz is a PhD student in Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) at the University of Manitoba, with more than 15 years of experience in the non-profit sector. Her PhD research, Naturalizing Intersectional Gender-Based Analysis Into Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding Strategies, builds upon already existing transdisciplinary foundations within Peace and Conflict Studies.

Krista’s research focusses on developing methodologies and research protocols which identify, and address inequity and marginalization produced by and through everyday power and resource systems. More specifically, her work is concerned with centralizing the intersectional lived experiences of women, self-identifying women and Two-Spirited individuals in order to naturalize intersectional gender-based analysis into sustainable systems change. Her areas of study and research include critical and feminist theory, environmental and animal ethics, non-violence, and gender-based institutional and systems analysis.

Krista's advice for other emerging researchers and students is to "find an art form you love and explore it".

In June 2026, the CHRR hosted a webinar on oral history methodology with Dr. Janis Thiessen (University of Winnipeg). Dr. Thiessen provided an overview of oral history methodology that addresses a number of crucial questions, including: What is oral history? When should scholars use this methodology (and when should it be avoided)? How should an oral history be conducted? How should archived oral histories be used and interpreted?

On October 30, 2025, the University of Manitoba’s Just Waters project, Institute for the Humanities - University of Manitoba (UMIH), and Department of History hosted Dr. Shannon Stunden Bower for a talk titled, “Refusing to Harness a River: A Study of Dryland Farmers Resisting Irrigation in mid-20th Century Saskatchewan.”

This talk focused on dryland farmers from Saskatchewan’s Outlook-Broderick area in their efforts to resist the Saskatchewan government’s attempts to compel them to irrigate.

The deadline for the Just Waters fellowship for Indigenous and racialized graduate students is only 10 days away!

This interdisciplinary fellowship is designed to support Canadian Indigenous and Racialized Graduate Students pursuing master’s or doctoral programs at the University of Manitoba, with a research component of their degree program with a focus on issues of water and justice.

Recipients must be self-declared as a First Nations, Métis or Inuit person from Canada or identify as racialized, have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours of studies, and be in good standing with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Must be a full-time UM student registered in the 2026-2027 academic year.

Value: $7,500
