Shumuna Jiu Jitsu

On May 25th, Shumuna had the honour of promoting three students. Congratulations to our newest yellow belts, Liam and Danielle and our black belt Terry. All three belt level challenges were amazing and the family and friends were treated to some polished techniques. We are very proud of our dojo and look forward to starting up again next Fall.

Shumuna is very excited to work with Just Be Wellness Studio in Portage La Prairie in offering two workshops in May. If you are interested in joining us please register using the email in the poster.

We conducted a Shumuna Jiujitsu Women's Personal Protection session at Adrenaline Fitness in Stonewall, Manitoba. The class was filled with an amazing group of upbeat and enthusiastic participants who were very interested in learning. Special thanks to Sensei Rob Lewis for his assistance this evening.

Here is our Manitoba team picture taken at Capital Conquest in Ottawa. We were privileged to have Sensei Moe Oye and Sensei Milton Good from Judo Manitoba join our group. Sensei Oye is 87 and he and Sensei Milton taught judo on the main stage to a large class. They finished up by performing a Judo Kata. Sensei Oye holds the rank of 9th Degree Black belt and is one of only five Canadian Judoka to ever reach that level. Tonight, he was inducted into the Canadian Black Belt Hall Of Fame and is the first Judo practitioner from Western Canada to receive this award. It was an honour to have he and Sensei Milton as part of our Manitoba jiujitsu team.

Shumuna Jiujitsu recently held a second level 1 Personal Protection Strategies For Seniors clinic at Adrenaline Fitness in Stonewall. The session was led by 7th Degree Black Belt holder Rick Williamson who was assisted by student Chris James.
Falling is the most serious event facing seniors today and exercises to increase lower body strength and flexibility were covered. Participants were then taught how to have a stronger stance, pivot, turn and move while keeping their balance. Balance exercises to do at home were also practiced. Situational awareness, in and out of the home is very important and everyone was encouraged to look for clutter, poorly lit stairways, loose rugs, uncovered cords and anything that could cause a potentially life changing fall.
The session wrapped up with the participants practicing some escapes from wrist grabs, front and rear chokes and applying finger lock takedowns from shoulder grabs. The group was very enthusiastic and some wanted another session so next one will take place on Wednesday, June 20. There are two sold out clinics happening in Gimli on the same day and two more groups in the area are putting sessions together for later in the year.

17 Wing Winnipeg hosted Women in Sport Day on March 7th, for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) women from around Manitoba. The event organized by PSP, provided introductory lessons on a mix of different sports to increase participation of women in CAF Sports through connection and resources. The event was held in conjunction with International Women's day on March 8th.
Shumuna Jiu Jitsu wants to thank 17 Wing for inviting us to be a part of their special day. It was an honour to be able to discuss the importance of developing technique and awareness in order to be better prepared for an unprovoked attack.
