Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute

Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute MBCI is a Christ-centered middle and secondary school, equipping students to learn, love, and engage with the world.

Students of MBCI are provided an education that goes beyond preparing them for post-secondary schooling. Students of MBCI are readied by their curriculum, their experiences, their teachers, and their peers to realize their potential. Graduates of MBCI leave the school rooted in what has come before them and prepared for what is yet to be. Students of MBCI are challenged, guided, and encouraged in

the development of high ethical standards. Students learn, live by, and in turn, teach our world’s ever-expanding definition of right and wrong, good and evil, virtue and vice, justice and injustice. Graduates of MBCI are prepared to live life after school by these principles learned within our walls and apply them always for the greater good. Students of MBCI are invited to adopt a Christian world view and to interpret the world around them from a Christian perspective. Graduates of MBCI use this passion as a guide in their current and future relationships with people and God. Attention to MBCI’s Foundations, a conscientious learning environment, biblical studies courses, activities such as chapel, and interactions with teachers demonstrate to students what it means to be a Christian and how Christianity can positively affect their daily lives. Students of MBCI are given every opportunity to develop character through a healthy balance of curriculum, competition, and community. Participation in extra-curricular activities in combination with the other elements at the respectful core of MBCI’s Foundation enables students and graduates to find and claim their direction, their purpose, and their calling while fostering lifelong friendships and connection with community.

✨⛳️🎉Thank you to all of the golfers and sponsors who helped to make MBCI’s 32nd Annual Golf Tournament a resounding success! It was a beautiful day to be on the links at Larter’s, with the conversations and connections making the experience even more special.

We are thrilled and grateful to announce a record-breaking $91,250 raised in support of the MBCI Bursary Fund, helping to make Christ-centered education accessible for everyone. Over the course of the tournament’s history, and through the profound generosity of our community, more than $1M total has been raised through this event with every dollar going toward removing financial obstacles for families that might otherwise not be able to be part of our MBCI community. THANK YOU!💚

Results like this are only made possible with the engagement of our community and the generous commitment of our event sponsors. Check out the link in our profile for a full list of sponsors and prize winners.

A well-designed project can be repeated year after year, with students looking forward to when it is their turn to tackle this challenge for themselves. Projects like Mad Matter, Hot Shot, Cardboard Chair Challenge, and creating crystals are annual opportunities, with students vying to have their photo displayed in the science hallway as that years’ champs. Mr. Hiebert dug up a few “blasts from the past” to take us on a trip down memory lane. Our apologies, of course, to all the winners who aren’t represented – your victory will always live on in our hearts.

It’s almost a year now since we installed this Legacy Wall in the link walkway. It was a wonderful addition to our 80th Anniversary Homecoming in September, and has been a draw for both students and alumni throughout the year.

At a recent Class of 1961 reunion our guests enjoyed this walk down memory lane, able to relate to the older photos in ways our current students have trouble imagining. And our current students draw interesting observations from the installation as well, commenting on the long row of mostly black-and-white Principal photos before noting the introduction of the first female Principal just 10 years ago.

We’re grateful for this permanent reminder that MBCI is rooted in a rich and meaningful history and tradition, while also always looking to adapt to our present context with the best of what we know today about how students learn and grow.

Co-curriculars are an important part of life at MBCI, providing students with opportunities to engage outside of the classroom. One of our co-curricular groups gives students hands-on experience working as a team with local charitable organizaitons.

YiP (Youth in Philanthropy) is supported by The Winnipeg Foundation, and each year MBCI’s YiP committee receives $6,000 to distribute to the charities of their choice. Students first work together to determine their areas of focus, goals and criteria, followed by research, interviews and visits with local charities that meet these criteria. Each member of the committee helps to decide which charities will receive YiP grants and how it will be spent, before submitting recommendations to The Winnipeg Foundation for final approval.

This year, MBCI’s YiP distributed grants to JustCity Inc for housing and transportation programs, Canadian Mental Health Association for their Hope & Purpose Program, Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation for the Emergency Food Pantry, and United Way of Winnipeg for Koats for Kids & Hygiene Kits.

An important focus of Project Based Learning is finding real-world application and an authentic audience. MBCI’s relationship with Bethania Personal Care Home has been just one of the significant ways that our students translate their learning into service and relationships with our Grade 12 Biology students and Grade 5 class both having a long-term connection. Our Grade 5 class visits regularly through the year to form cross-generational friendships and explore themes from their Bible class curriculum, culminating with a student-led chapel at Bethania near the end of the year.

We’re grateful for the ways our students are able to serve others through this connection, and also for the ways that they are able to learn and be shaped by individuals with a long lifetime of experience and wisdom to share.
