On September 25th, we welcomed alumni from the late 1960s back to St John’s College for a special luncheon as part of UM’s 2026 Homecoming celebrations. The gathering gave alumni a chance to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about their College days.

There’s a lot of SJC in one of this fall’s most talked-about books! 📚

Fellows Sean Carleton and Niigaan Sinclair edited “Truth Before Reconciliation,” with Adele Perry among its contributors. Published by University of Manitoba Press, the book was named one of CBC Books’ most anticipated nonfiction reads of fall 2026 and has made The Globe and Mail’s bestseller list.

We’re proud to see this important work reaching readers across the country, especially as we reflect on the meaning of truth and reconciliation this week.

Two St John’s College Fellows have been recognized by the Royal Society of Canada! 🎉

Warren Cariou has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. A Red River Métis writer and scholar, Warren explores Indigenous belonging through poetry, memoir, fiction, film and photography. As the founding director of UM’s Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, he helped create a space for students, faculty, Elders and Knowledge Keepers to share stories and learn from one another.

Adele Perry has received the J.B. Tyrell Historical Medal. An internationally recognized historian, her research has reshaped understandings of colonialism in Canada. For more than two decades, she has brought feminist and decolonzing perspectives to historical research, and shown how understanding the past can build more equitable futures.

Life’s just more fun as a College member 🫣

We started the week with Matriculation and wrapped it up with our annual BBQ with St. Paul’s College. There were burgers, games, plenty of laughs, and a few very enthusiastic attempts at staying on our feet 🤣

Yesterday was a busy one at the College! 📜

→ We began with Matriculation, welcoming new students, staff, Fellows and other members of the SJC community to sign the matricula, a tradition dating back to 1866. We even had a special appearance from alumnus, Robert Stewart, a 1968 grad who never had the chance to sign!

💡Fun fact: Yesterday’s signatures were filled on the last page of this historic book!

→ After a post-Matriculation reception and Assembly, we gathered again for the Beginning of Term Reception with Fellows, retired Fellows and staff.
