St. John Brebeuf School

We are a Catholic school in the heart of River Heights.

Our school provides a nurturing, Christ-centred learning environment where students strive to be their best selves. Our mission is to co-operate with parish families to help children become creative Christians in the world. Drawing on the resources of the Catholic Church, the professional competency of the staff, and the strength and love of the family, we educate children in spirit, mind and body.

Following our whole-school smudge ceremony, every member of our school community added their handprint to a collaborative art piece reflecting the message Every Child Matters. 🧡
The finished piece will be revealed once it finds its special place on display in our school. We also enjoyed some delicious bannock for afternoon snack.

Today, our school community came together to remember and reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

Wearing our orange shirts, we met on the field for a smudging ceremony. Our Grade 4 students sang O Canada in Cree, followed by a time for reflection before taking part in activities throughout the school.

Grade 4 & 5 headed out for an Amazing Agriculture field trip! Students learned about the technology behind milking cows, why cows wear “Fitbits,” and all about honey bees, Holsteins, chickens and goats. They played games, explored agriculture in action, and even enjoyed a trailer ride pulled by an electric tractor! 🚜
A fun day of learning beyond the classroom!

Today, our school community gathered for our first Mass of the school year, celebrating the feast day of our school’s namesake, St. John Brébeuf.

The choir sang the Huron Carol, a song connected to St. John Brébeuf and his work with the Huron-Wendat people. New students and staff were also welcomed with Virtues Cross necklaces.

It was a beautiful way to begin the school year together.

We were grateful to welcome Deanna from The Terry Fox Foundation, who shared Terry’s story and inspired our students to see how one person’s determination can create lasting change. Every step we took was a step toward following Terry’s example and making a difference together.

As we wrap up the school year, we celebrate all that our Grade 8 students have accomplished and the incredible growth they’ve shown throughout their journey. We are so proud of the young people they have become and all they have achieved during their time at our school.

As they begin this exciting new chapter in high school, we wish them every success and hope they carry with them the lessons they’ve learned, the friendships they’ve built, and the memories they’ve made along the way.

A heartfelt thank you to the parents, families, and educators for their unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement throughout their elementary years.

Congratulations, SJB Grade 8 Class of 2026!
