Our Vision: To build applied post-secondary education, healthy housing and food sovereignty with remote First Nation communities

This 6-year talent grant (2017-2023) from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada will provide post-secondary educational opportunities for 150 to 250 students from Wasagamack and Garden Hill First Nations by offering programming and funding to local students taking community-led, entry level, sustainable housing certificates and other projects-based programming. More saplings (poplar, cottonwood, and willows) have been planted at the Camp Kitigay in Beaconia. The grassland is being transformed into a restored forest. We have planted 80 plants in this season.

To restore Native ecosystem, tree saplings (Poplar-60, willow-7, ash-2, and dogwood-2) were planted at Camp Kitigay, Beaconia, using saplings from the nearby forest to plant in the grassland. Tree planting is one of the key practices for ecosystem restoration. Trees contribute to climate change mitigation.

Planning to build this aeroponics system with a university class cohort from York Landing in mid-August at York landing. Check it out - we are going to grow food all year locally. To get there we hope water levels are higher, which requires Manitoba Hydro to readjust levels to consider impacted communities, and that the Split Lake fire risk is low and they are all safe to return. York Landing needs a working ferry - with the fire threat for evacuation and for everyday living.
