Kiskenimisowin Nikaniwi (Finding Yourself and Leadership), is a new four-week summer program that supports Indigenous medical students through clinical placements, cultural learning and leadership development.

Delivered by the University of Manitoba’s Ongomiizwin - Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing in partnership with the Health Care Retention & Recruitment Manitoba's Discover Health Careers Program, the initiative helps address barriers Indigenous learners may face in accessing clinical experiences and mentorship opportunities.

Participants spend three weeks in clinical shadowing placements, primarily in Indigenous and northern/rural settings, followed by one week of cultural and leadership programming.

Fresh out of the University of Manitoba nursing school in 1984, Dr. Sharon Bruce started working at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital.

It didn’t take long for her to recognize that some children and families faced more obstacles to good health than others.

“I saw clear disparities,” she recalls. “Certain injuries and illnesses were over-represented, and many patients affected were Indigenous. After three years, I wanted to learn more about equity and disparities in health care.”

Today, Dr. Bruce is a professor in the College of Community and Global Health, where her teaching areas include culture and health and health promotion. She also led the department of community health sciences from 2018 to 2023.

Dr. Depeng Jiang, a professor in the University of Manitoba's College of Community and Global Health, translates complex data into insights that shape health policy and program design.

As a biostatistician and translational statistician, he works at the intersection of statistics and health sciences.

Nearly 30 years after receiving her first degree at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Cara Brown began a two-year term as acting head of the occupational therapy department at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences on July 1.
