Meet The Team – Rémi Durocher
-Manufacturing Lead
-5 years - Mechanical Engineering
-Team Member for 3years

What is your role on the team? :

I oversee the planning and manufacturing of all the parts that are built for the car, ensuring that all the parts are made per the designs and are made on time for assembly.

What does UMSAE mean to you? :

For me, UMSAE has been an opportunity to learn and develop the skills before entering industry. Its given me that chance to apply what I've learned in the classroom to real life problems, as well as gain hands on skills that I've come to use in my everyday life. On top of that, UMSAE has helped me land some pretty cool opportunities and network with people from around the world!

Favorite Part of your section/role? :

Coming up with innovate ways to manufacture parts. Sometimes you don't have all the resources to build something the first way you thought of and need to think outside the box for solutions.

Any advice to new students looking to join UMSAE? :

The more interest and involvement you show, the more exciting opportunities that will come your way! We're always have cool projects to work on and are always looking for people to help out. Never be afraid that you don't have the knowledge or experience to work on these projects All the member on the teams, no matter their position, started in the same place. We are all here to support and work with each other towards the common goal of building a kickass racecar!

Meet The Team – Olga Markov
-Driver Interface & Controls Section Lead
-Too many years - Mechanical Engineering
-Team Member for 4years

What is your role on the team? :

Responsible for designing & manufacturing my respective section.

What does UMSAE mean to you? :

carbon-fibre filled lungs (jk....?). It's a really great group of people that dedicate their limited spare time to work on cool projects!

Favorite Part of your section/role? :

This section is made up of various sub-assemblies which are all very different from each-other, it is a really versatile section!

Any advice to new students looking to join UMSAE? :

Don't be hesitant to sign up and try things out, best case you get to contribute to a real cool project, worst case you learn what you’re not interested in!

Meet The Team – Jerrod Alcantara
-Brakes and Uprights Section Lead
-5th year Mechanical Engineering
-Team Member for 3years

What is your role on the team? :

Taking over the production of the brakes and uprights system for PBR 20 and beginning to re-design elements of the system for PBR21.

What does UMSAE mean to you? :

UMSAE has been a great place for me to meet new people and develop my skills and engineering knowledge. I've really enjoyed how I've been able to apply some theory I've learned in classes while having some fun!

Favorite Part of your section/role? :

How multi-dimensional it is! In order for this system to be designed and built, it requires the application of stress analysis, heat transfer and manufacturing all in the context of vehicle design and vehicle dynamics.

Any advice to new students looking to join UMSAE? :

Don't be afraid to ask questions! There are so many things on the vehicles that we build and design that no one person can fully understand everything that's going on - even now I'm learning new things and little details I never knew before which makes being on the team continually rewarding!

Meet The Team - Mark Kublick
Team Lead
-5th year Mechanical Engineering
-Team Member for 5years

What is your role on the team? :

As Team Lead, I manage the team, from chairing meetings to updating our Asana profile. I make sure a schedule is established and strictly adhered to in order to maximise productivity. In addition to project management, I also am the focal point between the Executive Committee and the team, as well as all communication with the faculty. All competition related documentation is also my responsibility.

What does UMSAE mean to you? :

An opportunity to participate in a high intensity, design oriented challenge that provides an immediate and practical way to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. Additionally, it’s always been a passion of mine to design and build things, so to see a multifaceted, complicated design project from inception to competition is an incredible opportunity. Mix that with motorsport and racing, that fires me up.

Favorite Part of your section/role? :

My favourite part about leading the team is the experience I get. The role allows me to oversee all the sections, getting exposure to all of the aspects of the car. This broad lens allows me to view the organisation from a macroscopic perspective, which is a huge advantage when trying to make improvements and work towards making the team even better.

Any advice to new students looking to join UMSAE? :

If you have considered joining our team, I cannot recommend it enough. Having a community of like-minded, passionate individuals working towards a common goal is an incredible thing, and is an amazing thing to be a part of. Plus, having a wide knowledge base to lean on is a huge help when navigating the path towards your engineering degree.

Meet The Team - Sean Pigeau
Engineering Lead
-5th year Mechanical
-Team Member for 5years

What is your role on the team? :
I work on system level integration and oversee the engineering decisions made while designing the car. I ensure that all our decisions have sufficient engineering justification.

What does UMSAE mean to you? :
UMSAE has been an amazing source of engineering experience for me. I have had the opportunity to learn many hands-on skills such as machining and testing setups. Being a part of a team has meant I’ve been able to connect the theory from classes to a real project and see how theory works in real time.

Favorite Part of your section/role? :
I love the vehicle simulation aspect of my role. Understanding how every part from every section works together to make our car perform.

Any advice to new students looking to join UMSAE? :
Get Involved! Keep asking what you can do and how you can help. There’s always something to do. Don’t be afraid to take on researching tasks. Researching is an invaluable skill that will come in handy in all aspects of your life. I can guarantee that down the road in industry, that you will have to look for ideas and solutions to a problem you have never seen before. Having researching skills will it mush faster and easier to go from a problem to a solution.
