Most beginners eventually discover that their belt has plans of its own.

One side gets longer. The knot starts turning. Somebody looks down mid-drill, and suddenly we are performing emergency belt maintenance.

I complain about it.

But I’m not entirely sure I want them to stop.

If your child has done martial arts, did they ever spend more time fighting with the belt than doing the drill?

Parents sometimes ask whether martial arts can give their child confidence. I’m not sure it works that way.

Students still hesitate. They still get things wrong. Even experienced students can have days when something that should be easy suddenly isn’t.

So what are we actually looking for when we say a child is becoming more confident?

Two students can look equally stuck and need very different responses.

From the outside, it isn’t always obvious what’s really going on.

As a parent, which is harder to tell: when your child genuinely can’t do something yet, or when they can but are holding back?

That question changes how I approach the student.

Years after she stopped training with me, I ran into one of my former students somewhere I never expected.

I remembered her as an unusually gifted beginner. Her fundamentals were so far ahead of where I expected a beginner to be that I double-promoted her early in my teaching career.

She only trained with us for about a year and a half before life took her in a different direction.

Then, years later, I saw her again.

That reunion stayed with me for reasons I never would have expected when she was a white belt.

There’s a point when your teenager’s success stops telling you whether they’re actually ready.

Good grades matter. Showing up matters. Learning discipline matters.

But adulthood eventually puts them in rooms where everyone was successful somewhere else too—and where Mom, Dad, teachers and instructors aren't always there to provide the push.

At some point, the standard has to become their own.

That's something we think about a lot when working with older students at Northwest Martial Arts Academy.

One small drop can change everything around it.

Growth can start the same way. A little more confidence. A little more discipline. One more try when giving up would be easier.

A child can do everything they're told and still not respect you.

Parents have told me for years that they want their child to learn more respect. Better manners. Better listening. Following directions without being told over and over again.

Those things matter.

But I've also had students who did what I asked simply because I was the instructor. That's compliance. Sometimes I need that, especially when safety is involved.

But that's not where I want them to stay.

Over the years, I've noticed there's a point where something changes. I'm no longer trying to pull cooperation out of the student. They start choosing to give it.

That's the part I think we sometimes miss when we talk about teaching kids respect.

How hard can you squeeze?

Strength is easy to notice.

Control is harder to see.

Knowing when to push harder matters. Knowing when enough is enough matters too.

In martial arts, we don’t just train students to generate power. We train them to control it.

Because real strength isn’t only about what you can do.

It’s also knowing when not to.

Every once in a while, a student does something that makes me think, **“Where in the world did THAT come from?”**

We were doing a sparring drill.

Nothing special. Just two students trying to work through a sequence.

Then something changed.

One of them started moving in a way I'd never seen from him before.

I noticed.

The higher ranks noticed.

He didn't.

So I didn't say anything.

I changed a few things in the drill and let it play out.

For a few minutes, I got a glimpse of something I didn't know was there.

And then, just like that, it was gone.

That's the part of teaching I don't think you can plan for.

Sometimes you're just lucky enough to be there when it happens.

Some days your child walks into class ready to go. Other days, you can tell almost immediately.

Something's different.

Maybe they're quieter than usual. Maybe the energy just isn't there. And when you've taught a student for a while, those little changes become easier to notice.

As a parent, you've probably seen it too.

The temptation is to figure out what's wrong.

But I've learned that isn't always the first thing they need from us.

I wrote about what I've learned from those days — both as an instructor and as someone who has a few of them himself.
