Empowering consumers with information, education, and representation. Encouraging marketplace fairne

The Consumer INFOcentre provides consumer education and information programs in Winnipeg and across the province. The Centre also organizes a series of consumer info sessions covering a wide range of consumer topics.

The Manitoba Branch of the Consumers’ Association of Canada (CAC Manitoba) regularly engages in research that examines issues which impact consumers, with particular attention to those that affect vulnerable consumers. One such issue that has received increasing media attention, particularly of late, is the shortage of safe and affordable housing for Canadian consumers.

Widespread barriers to adequate, safe and affordable housing persist in Canada, and contribute to the crisis of houselessness and precarious housing in urban and rural centers across the country. CAC MB understands these barriers to disproportionately affect vulnerable and marginalized consumers, and to have been exacerbated by both the pressure on household finances wrought by the pandemic period and, more recently, by high inflation.

In an effort to better understand the impacts, CAC Manitoba has undertaken a two-year research project (funded by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s Contributions Program for Non-profit Consumer and Voluntary Organizations*) to examine the realities and impacts of discrimination in the provision of housing on low-income and vulnerable consumers.

Did you know that one of the top three reasons people surrender their pets to animal shelters is loss of suitable pet-friendly housing? Companion animals are part of the family, and surrendering loved pets to an overcrowded shelter and rescue system causes trauma both to animals and the humans who care about them.

Can you sign the new federal petition to help ensure tenants with pets are no longer excluded from rental housing?

Folks are also being asked to write to their MPs about the renters bill of rights and highlight the difficulties renters with companion animals face when trying to find housing.

Ask Your Candidate!

As Manitobans prepare to go to the polls on October 3, CAC Manitoba encourages you to help keep consumer issues on the political agenda. As a Manitoban, you have both the right and the responsibility to determine where the candidates stand on issues that affect consumers in the marketplace. The combined voice of consumers taking part in the election process will impact the future prominence of consumer issues in the province.

Election Issues

An effective and sustainable marketplace promotes justice and fairness for all consumers and respects their rights to be heard and informed. Social and income inequalities, misleading information, or even an unhealthy environment, are some of the barriers to full marketplace participation and a strong consumer voice in our province.

Here are a few consumer issues to keep in mind this election.
- housing access and affordability
- preventative and supportive healthcare
- income supports
- food security
- seniors’ health and wellness
- environmental sustainability

On Tuesday, October 3, cast a ballot. Your vote counts and your voice matters!
