The Department of Family Medicine invites colleagues to connect, collaborate, and learn at the 2026 DFM CONNECT Conference on October 16–17, 2026.

The DFM CONNECT Conference brings faculty together to strengthen relationships, build community and develop skills in clinical teaching, academia and leadership. Participants will have opportunities to learn from and with each other while developing their skills as educators, leaders, scholars, communicators and collaborators.

Sessions include:
-Welcoming faculty and making connections with peers
-Team trivia
-Distributed Education and the DFM
-Collaboration for Safer Care: A CMPA workshop on building trust and navigating conflict
-Team building
-Closing plenary

Conference Registration is $250 plus tax (attendees of the October 16 DFM and Doctors Manitoba POCUS Workshop are eligible for a 25% discount on conference registration.

The DFM Pet Calendar Photo Competition is Back!

After the success of our first-ever pet calendar, we’re searching for the 12 new stars of the 2027 Department of Family Medicine Pet Calendar!

Department of Family Medicine faculty and staff are invited to submit their photo any time before October 31, 2026.

On Friday, August 21, the Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) community gathered for the Class of 2026 Grad Dinner to celebrate graduating students’ accomplishments and perseverance.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to honour the memory of Will Husarewycz and reflect on the important place he held within the Class of 2026.

Congratulations to the MPAS Class of 2026 on all you have accomplished. We wish you every success as you move forward in your careers and continue making a difference in the lives of your patients and communities.

A warm welcome to our new residents!

Residents, faculty, and staff came together during the Resident Welcome BBQ on June 29 to celebrate the start of a new academic year. We are excited to welcome new residents as they begin the next stage of their training and continue their journey in family medicine.

The Department of Family Medicine is proud to congratulate Dr. Peter Nickerson on being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

A world-renowned physician-scientist, health sciences education leader, transplant nephrologist, and UM distinguished professor, Dr. Nickerson has made significant contributions to kidney donation and transplantation in Canada and around the world. His work has improved access to life-prolonging kidney transplants and helped reduce the risk of organ rejection for patients.

This well-deserved recognition reflects an extraordinary career of leadership, research, collaboration, and service to health care.

"Gestational Diabetes: How Physician Assistants Are Improving Treatment" with speaker Nikki Semaniuk, Physician Assistant.

The Department of Family Medicine’s Grand Rounds bring together medical learners, health professionals, faculty, and partners to explore important and emerging topics in primary care.

This online session will highlight how physician assistants are supporting improved care and treatment for patients with gestational diabetes, while contributing to collaborative, team-based approaches in primary care.

All interested medical learners and medical professionals are welcome to attend.
