A new group of future electricians is joining us next week! ⚡

Your first few days at IBEW Training Center are all about getting comfortable with your new surroundings and the people you'll be learning alongside for the next nine months.

You'll:
👋 Meet your instructors
🤝 Meet your classmates
🏫 Tour the classrooms, labs and training spaces
⚡ Go through orientation and get ready for what's ahead

Then, the real learning begins.

Over the next nine months, you'll build the foundational electrical knowledge and hands on skills you need to confidently take that next step into an apprenticeship and onto your first job site.

No electrical experience? That's what you're coming to school to get. 🔧⚡

Before you learn to wire a panel or bend conduit, you learn how to protect yourself.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) isn't just a requirement. It's one of the first lessons every apprentice learns because safety is part of the job from day one.

Here's what you'll typically see on a job site:
🦺 CSA approved hard hat
👓 Safety glasses
👂 Hearing protection
🥾 CSA approved safety boots
🦺 High visibility safety vest
🧤 Work gloves (when the task requires them)

The good news? Most employers provide the majority of your PPE. The one item you'll usually be responsible for is your CSA approved safety boots.

At the IBEW Training Center, safe work habits are built into everything we teach, so when you step onto a job site, safety is already second nature.

Starting a new trade can feel a little overwhelming. One minute you're excited to become an electrician. The next, you're talking to someone who's been in the field and wondering if you accidentally signed up for rocket science.

The good news? Every apprentice started exactly where you are now.

You don't need to know everything on day one. That's why you're here. We'll teach you one skill at a time, from the basics to the more advanced techniques, building your confidence every step of the way.

Before long, you'll be the one accidentally intimidating the next group of new students. 😅

Working in the electrical trade takes focus, problem solving, and attention to detail. That's why taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your tools.

Taking a break doesn't mean you're falling behind. It means you're giving your mind a chance to reset so you can return focused, alert, and ready to work safely.

Whether it's stepping outside for a few minutes, grabbing some water, or taking a moment to clear your head after a challenging task, those small breaks can make a big difference over the course of the day.

A long career in the trades isn't just built on technical skills. It's built on healthy habits that help you perform at your best, every day.

What is this thing?⚡

This electrical training workstation gives students a safe, hands on way to put electrical theory into practice.

In the lab, students can build and test circuits, work with motors and three phase power, take electrical measurements, and practice troubleshooting different scenarios.

It’s one thing to learn how electricity works in the classroom. It’s another to wire it, test it and see it in action.

That’s why hands on training is such an important part of preparing for a career as an electrician.

Thinking about becoming an electrician but worried about the cost?

The good news is that there are several financial supports available to apprentices in Manitoba that can help make your career more affordable. ⚡

As a registered apprentice, you may be eligible for:
✔️ Employment Insurance (EI) while attending technical training (if you qualify)
✔️ Provincial bursaries and financial assistance through Apprenticeship Manitoba
✔️ Financial support for travel, lodging, child care, or public transit during technical training (if eligible)
✔️ Low technical training costs, with the Manitoba government subsidizing the majority of your tuition each level.

A career in the trades is an investment, but you don't have to do it alone.

Learning a new trade can feel intimidating. And that's completely normal. ⚡

Every student who walks through our doors is learning something for the first time. Whether it's operating a scissor lift, bending conduit, or opening the Code Book, no one is expected to know it all on day one.

That's why our instructors are here. They'll guide you through every new skill, answer your questions, and help you build confidence one lesson at a time. You'll also be surrounded by classmates who are on the same journey, learning, making mistakes, and encouraging each other along the way.

The best advice we can give? Don't try to learn everything at once. Show up, ask questions, lean on your instructors and classmates, and take it one day at a time.

One day you'll look back and realize the things that once felt impossible have become second nature.

The Code Book will become one of the most important tools in your toolbox.

If you're new to the electrical trade, the Canadian Electrical Code can look a little intimidating. Hundreds of pages, thousands of rules, and plenty of tabs.

The good news? You're not expected to memorize it.

One of the first skills you'll learn is how to navigate the Code Book so you can quickly find the information you need. Understanding where to look is just as important as understanding the rule itself.

Throughout the program, you'll use the Code Book in class, in the lab, and on open book exams, building the confidence you'll need to use it throughout your career.

Every experienced electrician started by learning how to find the answers.
