When sleep goes off the rails again and again, it’s normal first of all. But getting back to the basics at bedtime is a great place to start troubleshooting if you’re dealing with short naps, false starts, overnight wakes, or your child is taking forever to fall asleep.

If you do that again there will be consequences.

I need to discipline him otherwise he’ll learn he can walk all over me.

I’m warning you, if you hit me again there will be no tv tomorrow.

Stop swearing or I’ll wash your mouth out with soap.

One of the biggest dupes in parenting is that these statements represent discipline.

They don’t.

They are punishments.

Because I told you to behave a certain way and you didn’t, you’ll be punished.

This creates fear and shame, and that “me vs you” mentality.

At the most basic level, it’s the knee-jerk reaction to punish in the moment when we experience misbehaviour that needs to change if we want to break cycles.

It’s not about winning the power struggle, it’s about teaching.

True discipline teaches emotion regulation skills, decision making, problem solving skills, and lays the groundwork for interpersonal communication skills when our kids encounter difficult conversations.
