Literally grandfather spirit, Didukhy are traditionally made from the first or the last stalks of wheat reaped during the year. They symbolize the household's wish for an abundance of nature and a bountiful harvest for the upcoming year.
It is brought into the house on Sviatyi Vechir (lit. The Holy Evening aka Christmas Eve) and placed in the Holy Corner. It is said that the ancestors hide in the wheat and that's how they join us to feast with us for the next 2 days and protect us during this darkest time of the year.
On the morning of the day after Christmas, the didukh is taken out of the house, thanked for coming, and invited to come back next year. The didukh is then either burned in a ritual fire before sunrise or fed to the animals.

Pavuk – Spider Weaves the Universe
In Ukrainian creation stories, spider weaved the universe. Ukrainians also consider these talismans a symbol of the union of generations.
It is known in Finnish as Himmeli (heavens), Lithuanian as Sodai (gardens), and Polish as Pająk (spider).
Traditionally, the spider is woven from straw after the harvest season then hung on the main beam of the house on winter solstice. The old one is burned in a ritual fire, usually the same time as the didukh, on the morning after Christmas, before sunrise or if it breaks. It is said to filter the energy of the house and when it breaks it has completed its task.
In this workshop, each person will make a pavuk to take home, as well as explore symbolism in Ukrainian creation stories.

Have you ever wondered what polyphony is?
For some of you, your introduction to polyphonic singing could be through our group or others practicing similar songs and traditions to keep our culture alive.
Polyphony is music theory, social connection, and so complex it's almost impossible to capture its brilliance as a whole in this short post.
It's important, though, to scratch the surface of this knowledge to spread awareness and keep a rich tradition and culture alive.
Kolektyv Chornezem and many other groups work to have a better understanding and to educate others so everyone can enjoy, understand, and practice singing beautiful songs.

Еnglish below:
Chornozem, literally black soil, is found in two places in the world: the Steppe of Eastern Europe and the Prairies of Turtle Island. It is said to be the among most fertile soil on the earth.
Through the earth and soil, we as a people connect. We connect to the cycles of nature, of agriculture and to all of the songs and rituals that revolve around them. We connect to our ancestors of blood and of place, that rest in the richness of the chornozem.
This Kolektyv invites all peoples, no matter their ancestry, to connect with the land and the ways of their ancestors, including through song, dance, craft, food, and agricultural practices.
The group was established in 2022.
