"The need for Essential Skills cannot be denied, and employers can’t assume that young employees entering the workforce have the Essential Skills levels needed for the workplace.
Many students do not graduate from high school (e.g. 48% of Aboriginals do not complete high school).
There are gaps between skills learned in school and skills needed in the workplace. Many companies are experiencing a skilled labour shortage as job applicants frequently do not have the skills necessary for them to hire, train and retain. Many of these same companies use a Grade 12 requirement combined with recruitment testing – which potential new workers are failing.

"The benefits of workplace Essential Skills training are measurable and significant.
For every 1% increase in literacy skills, productivity increases 2.5%, which leads to a 1.5% permanent increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For Manitoba, this translates to over $500 million more per year. For workers, this means more choices in the labour market, while for business and the government, this means being able to better compete in local, national and international markets. The value of these benefits is estimated to be three times higher than the investment made in improving workplace Essential Skills (Public Investment in Skills: Are Canadian Governments Doing Enough?, C.D. Howe Institute, 2005).

Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM) strives to be Manitoba’s centre of best practices for workplace Essential Skills consultation, assessment and training.
