Building a love for music starts early in a child’s development, and it starts by working with your child’s natural curiosity in ✨SOUNDS.✨ Keep them curious about sounds!
Below are just a few examples of how I implement daily music training with my 2-yr-old son.
1. Place instruments (or anything that makes “cool”
sounds!) in common areas of your home, like the living room. This encourages creative sound play for the entire family to listen and become involved.
2. Ask auditory questions throughout the day during everyday tasks and outings: “What sound is that making?”, “What does it sound like?” (Demonstrate a mimic of the sound, and then encourage your child to do the same - this encourages early ear-training, pitch-matching, and critical listening), “Does that sound high, or low?”, “Does that sound quiet, or loud?”, “Is that sound moving fast, or slow?”
3. When playing with instruments, ask questions like: “What does that instrument sound like?” (Let your child answer on their own to get their creative and auditory gears moving!), “How do you think the sound comes out of that instrument?”, “Where does the sound come from?”
4. Listen to music everyday and DISCUSS it! You do not have to be a musician to practice this at home: simply chat with your child about interesting things you hear in the songs/pieces, what instruments you are hearing, tempo (fast/slow), dynamics (loud/quiet), etc.
5. Ask your child to produce specific sounds on instruments with specific movements: “How can you make a quiet sound on the piano?”, “How can we make a loud sound with the tambourine?”, “When you strum the guitar, we hear many strings making sounds. How can we make only ONE sound?”
6. Listen to and observe all outdoor sounds. Say things like: “I hear the crickets (or birds, or cicadas!) singing. What song do you think they’re singing?”, “I hear the wind blowing. Is the wind blowing fast or slow?”, “I hear the rain falling, let’s sing along with it.”
Happy listening! 😊🎶✨
