The Literacy Loft

The Literacy Loft uses the Orton Gillingham method to work with people of all ages who have reading challenges. SERVICES ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

The Literacy Loft specializes in assisting people with varying levels of abilities to learn or improve their skills in reading, writing, spelling and comprehension. We also teach individualized learning strategies and assistive technology. We use the Orton Gillingham approach to literacy. It's a direct, language- based approach to learning which is multi-sensory, structured and flexible. It employs visual, auditory and tactile (touch) techniques to improve memory, retention and recall. With direct instruction, the person masters each new desired skill and, perhaps, more importantly, understands they have mastered these skills. This realization helps boost self-esteem and self-confidence.

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month - a time to recognize, understand, and celebrate the many different ways people learn.

Learning disabilities can affect reading, writing, math, communication, and other areas of learning, but they do not define a person’s abilities, potential, or success.

This month, let’s spread awareness, encourage understanding, and help create a more inclusive world where everyone has the support and opportunity they need to thrive. 💛

September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, survivors, and their families and communities.

It is also a time to reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system and to recognize the importance of listening, learning, remembering, and taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation.

Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics are a group of abugida writing systems used to represent several Indigenous languages in Canada, including Cree, Inuktitut, and Ojibwe.

Developed by missionary James Evans around 1840, the writing system is distinctive because vowel sounds are represented by rotating a consonant symbol into different orientations, rather than by adding diacritical marks.
