Orange Shirt Day is an annual day of remembrance on September 30 that honors the survivors and victims of the Canadian residential school system.
The day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad in 2013.
When she was six years old, her grandmother bought her a shiny new orange shirt for her first day at St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School in British Columbia.
Staff took away and stripped her of her clothes, including the orange shirt, which was never returned.
The color orange represents how her feelings and the feelings of other children did not matter.
The core message of the movement is that "every child matters".
It recognizes the 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children forced into residential schools, over 6,000 of whom died.
It coincides with Canada's federal National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to promote healing, education, and anti-racism.
