Happy Hands Nova Scotia

Happy Hands Nova Scotia Passionate about showing the beauty in braille, accessibility and inclusion.

For those who don’t know us, we’re Jamie and Griffin Patterson, a mother–son duo from Windsor, Nova Scotia. Together, we created Happy Hands to celebrate the beauty of Braille and spark conversations about inclusion and accessibility.

🎶 Meet Griffin:

Born at just 23 weeks in 2006, Griffin entered the world at 580 grams — a tiny warrior from the very start. Due to his extreme prematurity, he lost his vision from Retinopathy of Prematurity and was later diagnosed with autism. Fast forward to today — Griffin graduated in June 2025 and is now embracing his next chapter! Music is his heartbeat — whether he’s singing, playing piano, or lost in the sounds of one of the greats, he brings joy and rhythm to everything he does. Through Happy Hands, we’re sharing Griffin’s creativity and spreading a message close to our hearts: that kindness, accessibility, and art can all be felt. 💫

Thank you for joining us on this journey — your support helps us make the world a little brighter, one Braille creation at a time. 💛

🎨 AI can make a poster look amazing… but is it accessible?

AI-generated posters are everywhere right now, and there’s no doubt they can be creative, colourful and eye-catching. But accessibility is about more than how something looks.

A poster can be visually beautiful and still create barriers for people with disabilities.

Things like:
👀 Small or difficult-to-read text
🎨 Poor colour contrast
🖼️ Important information that exists only within an image
🔤 Decorative fonts that are hard to read
📱 No alternative text or accessible description
🧩 Busy layouts that make information difficult to find or understand

And here’s the important part: AI-generated doesn’t automatically mean inaccessible.

AI is a tool. We still need to think about the people who will be using and experiencing what we create.

So the next time you make a poster, don’t just ask:

“Does it look good?”

Ask:

“Can everyone access the information?” ❤️

At Happy Hands, we believe accessibility and inclusion should be part of the design from the beginning — not something added afterward.

Many people with disabilities find the term "special needs" unpleasant. There's nothing special about the need to access a public space, to participate in community events, and to do so with a sense of independence and dignity. These are needs we all have, they're not unique to people with disabilities.

"Special accommodation" is another term we could all do without. Calling an accommodation special implies this accommodation is not available to, or needed by, other team members. It singles out the employee who requested the accommodation, when in reality the change would likely benefit every member of the team. For example, if one bank teller needs to sit due to a disability, get chairs for each of the tellers and let them all sit.

Finally, if you find yourself saying "He has special needs" because you're afraid to say "he has a disability", remember that disability isn't a dirty word. It's just something a lot of us live with. It's common, it's normal, and it's not all that special.

❤️ Today we wear red ❤️

Today Griffin and I are wearing red to celebrate inclusion, accessibility, and the belief that everyone deserves opportunities to participate, belong, and shine.

For us, accessibility isn’t just a conversation — it’s everyday life. Today is about recognizing the importance of creating communities where everyone feels seen, valued, and included.

Because when barriers come down, everyone benefits ❤️

Proud to wear red with my favourite guy ❤️

Yesterday’s fundraiser for Tracy’s Place filled our hearts ❤️

As a business, we love being able to support organizations that make such a meaningful difference in our community — but Tracy’s Place is extra special to us.

Every day, Griffin gets to walk through those doors and be part of something truly incredible. Tracy’s Place isn’t just a program; it’s a family. The love, support, encouragement, and sense of belonging they create means more to us than words can express.

Being able to contribute, attend, and celebrate alongside so many amazing people yesterday reminded us just how lucky we are to have organizations like this in our community.

To everyone who organized, donated, volunteered, attended, or supported in any way — thank you. Your kindness and generosity help create spaces where people are valued, celebrated, included, and loved.

From all of us at Happy Hands, thank you, Tracy’s Place, for everything you do and for being such an important part of Griffin’s world 💙

Today we’re celebrating World Braille Day 🤍

Braille is more than dots on a page — it’s access, independence, literacy, and connection. From reading stories and music to labeling everyday items and creating meaningful handmade pieces, Braille opens the door to information and self-expression for people who are blind or have low vision.

We’re proud to incorporate Braille into what we do and to help spark conversations about accessibility and inclusion. Days like today remind us how powerful it is when information is truly meant for everyone.

✨ Learn it. Share it. Celebrate it.
Happy World Braille Day!

Music has always been close to our hearts, so creating our first “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” ornament feels extra special 💚

This ornament reads “Jingle Bell Rock” in Braille and marks the beginning of a fun, meaningful new line that blends holiday cheer with accessibility.

More rocking designs coming soon 🎶✨
