This summer, Yukon University's Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program students went to the Casino Mining Corporation's site to learn directly on the field.

Guided by Casino's Environmental Manager Andrew Menezes, students learned about the Casino Project, its specific environmental monitoring programs and methods, and proposed mitigations for potential environmental effects.

Students also focused on what industry employers are looking for in new Environmental Monitor hires; including program pillars of professionalism, accountability, and respect in camp communities.

Experiences like this are a great opportunity to connect Yukon students with real-world environmental and mining work happening here in the territory.

Last month, the School of Trades and Technology welcomed 19 Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers from across Canada for a three-week Skilled Trades Foundations program.

As the only participating institution to offer exposure to multiple trades, we delivered hands-on training in: welding, carpentry, electrical, small engine repair, beginner drone operations, CPR-C, WHMIS/TDG, fall protection, and amateur radio communications.

The students also got a city infrastructure tour featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Yukon Energy's Whitehorse Rapids Generating Station, the Transportation Museum, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, the Whitehorse Fish Ladder, and Miles Canyon.

Participants built their own boot boxes, fabricated fire pits, wired electrical circuits, disassembled and reassembled small engines, and experienced YukonU's world-class trades facilities.

They connected with 11 different School of Trades and Continuing Studies faculty members, Yukon First Nation Education Directorate partners during their riverboat build, and our cherished Elders Lounge.

The program introduced youth to skilled trades pathways while showcasing the unique opportunities available in the Yukon.

As interest in northern infrastructure, resilience, and Arctic sovereignty continues to grow, we are proud to host initiatives such as this one to meet Canada's northern priorities.

Yukon University is officially home to the first Zero Carbon Certified building in the Yukon!

The CAGBC has certified the new science building at the Ayamdigut Campus under the Zero Carbon Building Program.

What does this mean?

It means the building was built with sustainability at its core.

From using low-carbon materials during construction to zeroing out operational emissions through smart energy use and carbon offsets.

Today is Discovery Day in the Yukon, marking the 1896 gold discovery that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush, a turning point in Yukon’s history.

The two traditional Yukon riverboats are complete! 🚣

Youth in the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate Summer Leadership Program completed the two traditional riverboats under the guidance of Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Elder, Esau Schafer.

Through Esau’s mentorship, participants learned the skills and knowledge needed to build boats that continue to support hunting, fishing, and travel on Yukon rivers.

Even YukonU instructor Joe Calnan, a Red Seal Shipwright, was amazed at what he’s learned.

"These are boats you can build in the bush with a skill saw and a generator… it's amazing," said Calnan in reference to the knowledge shared by Elder Schafer.

One boat will be gifted to Elder Russell Burns, while the second is awaiting a motor and, hopefully, a moose hunt this fall.

This program ran in partnership with YukonU's School of Trades and Technology.

We are thrilled to share a major milestone for Northern sustainability!

The Government of Canada has announced a $7 million federal investment across eight clean energy projects in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

This will empower YukonU's Clean Energy Research Team where the funding will support the Northern Grid Impact Studies.

Through the Clean Energy for Rural and Remote Communities program (and contributions from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada) this initiative will fund people as much as projects; retaining knowledge and building a secure, sovereign energy future.

This research reinforces YukonU’s commitment to fostering a sustainable, resilient North for generations to come.
