What feeds your soul and fills your cup? Who buoys your spirits and makes you laugh? What moves you and reinvigorates you?

What gets in the way of you doing more of those things or spending more time with those people (or animals)? And conversely, who or what helps you to prioritize the people, things, and activities that light you up?

πŸ• This is Magnus - my big, cuddly adventure buddy. He keeps me accountable to moving my body every day, getting out into nature, exploring new places, and being present with the sun on my face, the smells of the forest, fresh air on my skin, and the joy of being alive. When he insists on play or cuddles or outside time, my mind stops racing through my to do list and I come back to the current moment.

🐾 I'm ashamed to admit that some days walking the dog feels like just one more thing on my to do list. I'm too tired. I don't feel like it. But when I'm able to shift my perspective and connect with his joyful exuberance at the little things, I enjoy the walk and our time together. Walks, play, nature, and the love of pets are part of what keeps me the best version of me.

❀️ Luckily, he never gives up on me, tires of our walks, or lets me give in to my misguided priorities when I think I could or should do just a little more work.

Who's your Magnus?

This time of year is a celebration of (re)birth and renewal in the northern hemisphere.

Whether you honour the Christian holiday of Easter, the recent vernal equinox, or simply the return of birdsong, baby bunnies, and the first buds of green plant life again, there is a feeling of things coming alive after a period of rest, hibernation, and turning inward to conserve energy.

Maybe you're feeling it too? The urge to do some spring cleaning, to look ahead, to reach out, to make social plans, or set goals for yourself.

The seasons inspire me to reflect and move in particular ways and spring certainly has me wanting to return to the mat and reinvigorate my practices: yoga, meditation, dance, and movement.

What seeds (literal or metaphorical) are you planting that you wish to nurture into new growth over the coming season?

Want to learn how to ACTUALLY make yourself a priority when you always put others first?

Are you someone who...
✨ consistently & reliably gets things done for others?
✨ takes on a lot & still manages to deliver?
✨ will sacrifice sleep, food, exercise, hobbies, & time with friends or family because you said you'd get something done?

* * *

If so, according to Gretchen Rubin's model, you might be an Obliger: someone who readily upholds external expectations but struggles to uphold inner expectations.

Left unchecked, always prioritizing other people's requests & ignoring or downplaying our own needs, can lead to & .

But Gretchen's analysis also offers tactical tips. Once you know your tendency, you also have the keys to influence different behaviours in yourself.

* * *

As an Obliger, you excel at meeting external expectations, so one way to get yourself to do something that's important to you is to create an external commitment to do it:
πŸ”‘ Commit to a friend that you'll work out together (when & where)
πŸ”‘ Join a class (with a set time... & pay in advance!)
πŸ”‘ Make plans with someone for after work if you're prone to too much overtime
πŸ”‘ Buy tickets to an event (museum, documentary, live performance, etc.) with a set date & time

Prioritizing things that you enjoy is a smart sustainability strategy to recharge your batteries so that you can continue serving in the way that is important to you. It's not selfish - it's an investment in being able to show up for others.

πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ If you're a , let me know in the comments some other tactics you use to stay !

P.S. Thanks to & everywhere for making informative, life-changing books like these accessible to so many people. πŸ™

Finding balance amidst the chaos 03/20/2021

Happy , all!

Today, every place on the surface of our planet has the same length of time between sunrise and sunset as between sunset and sunrise.

The equinoxes always inspire me to reflect on balance in my own life. With this article, I invite you to join me in that reflection and explore where you can find even a tiny bit more balance in your own life:
https://medium.com/.macmaster/finding-balance-amidst-the-chaos-2f67c6d2cd3e

Feel free to reach out to let me know:
(a) how you recognize when you are in and out of balance,
(b) what you are doing to help yourself find and sustain balance, and
(c) what becomes possible for you when you have more balance or what is so meaningful and important to you about balance.

Be well!
Caitlyn
