This summer in Whitehorse, our Early Childhood Educators took part in a two-part Salmon Workshop hosted and organized by ECEYT at Yukon University on August 8 and 22. Through inquiry-based learning, they explored the fascinating lifecycle of Yukon salmon and deepened their understanding of its cultural significance.
Equipped with a comprehensive Salmon Kit provided during the workshop, educators were empowered to bring their new knowledge into practice—sparking curiosity and meaningful exploration with the children. The kit provided all the tools needed to dive into hands-on learning, fostering a shared journey of discovery about salmon and their vital role in Yukon ecosystems and traditions.
Activities were implemented by Mitchele, Joarnie, Ella, E.C.Es

Toddler and Younger Preschool Update:
We had such a fun time heading out for a long walk along the Millennium Trail! The kids were buzzing with energy and curiosity—picking up interesting rocks, admiring colorful flowers, and spotting birds fluttering by. The highlight of our walk? Friendly firefighters waved and greeted us along the way, which absolutely thrilled the children!
We took a break to enjoy some snacks outdoors and soak in the fresh air—it was the perfect little adventure.
We went at the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, where the children had a fantastic time exploring. Their enthusiasm was contagious as they wandered around and took in the sights. It was a day full of nature and joyful discoveries!

Our field trip to the Fish Ladder was an engaging and memorable adventure! Once we arrived, children were captivated by the sights and sounds around them. They learned about how fish navigate the ladder to swim upstream, and watched in awe as several made their way through. The tour guide helped guide thoughtful discussions and sparked interest with fun facts, turning the visit into an interactive learning experience.

Booked for Adventure: A Day at Whitehorse Library
"Grateful for our new friends at the library, Alix and Andrea who gave us a special tour of the library, including a peek into the normally off-limits area. We watched how books are labeled, catalogued, and organized, and even got to experience the fascinating book drop process firsthand.
Alix captivated everyone with the story of The Midnight Library, followed by a creative craft session inspired by the tale. Afterward, we had time to explore the shelves and stumbled upon a treasure trove of vibrant and delightful picture books. It was an unforgettable day full of stories, curiosity and joy. The children had a long, exhausting day but it was certainly packed with fun and discovery!"
Shoutout to our ECEs who make it all happen: Mitchele, Joarnie and Ella

Mitchelle, ECE:
"This week, we’re diving into the exciting world of construction. We’ll explore how buildings are made, what materials are used, and even create our own structures using recycled items. Through hands-on play and discussions, children will build creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Get ready for a fun and constructive week!”

"Hoppy Bunny Hop
Hop, hop, hop, the bunnies play,
Skipping through the fields today.
The grass is green, the skies are blue,
Springtime’s here for me and you!
Hop, hop, hop, oh what fun,
Chasing butterflies, one by one. "

"Sometimes, when Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) introduce new materials to children, the children may engage with them in ways different from the educators' original intentions—and that’s perfectly okay! Children have their own unique perspectives and are free to explore new materials in their own way. By observing their interactions, we can build on their knowledge, interests, and what matters most to them."
