Creating purpose in your primary Montessori classroom can be deeply involved with nature. Creating simple cycles of nature allows other organisms to play responsible roles alongside the child, integrating their purpose with the child's, in activity and work. Work is the sustenance of life.
If you have an exercises in isolation, they are much less purposeful than if they are part of a cycle.
If other organisms play a natural part of the community, the children will make connections between themselves and these organisms.
The purposes of exercises are not only for the development of skills, they also are an aid to others.
The exercise of tearing paper to develop finger strength is filled with meaning and joy when it is completed for worm bedding.

These Yukon summers in the north are like the NatureTot System. Change is fast and furious. The microgreen growing cycle from seed to harvest and decomposition is over in a matter of weeks ~ cycles the child can observe all year long in a prepared environment.
For young children, such quick change helps them understand that nature is all about change. This quick growing cycle makes it very interesting to the child. It develops responsibility and connects the child to their actions. Practical exercises lead to science, language and a deeper sense of place.
