We are very thrilled to announce that Math'ieya Alatini will be joining us for the 2026 Health Summit as one of our key note speakers.

Math’ieya Alatini is a Southern Tutchone matriarch from Kluane First Nation and the Grand Chief of the Council of Yukon First Nations. Raised in both traditional and contemporary worlds, her leadership is grounded in Indigenous values, community relationships, and responsibility to future generations.

Her work focuses on strengthening Indigenous governance, advancing modern treaty implementation, and supporting self-determined communities. As a Research Associate with Yukon University and Board Chair of the One Yukon Coalition, she also works to integrate Indigenous knowledge with scientific research to address northern public health and environmental challenges.

YSPOR is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support People with lived and living experience (PWLE) initiatives within the YukonU Research Centre. Reporting to the Evaluation and Research Professional, this position provides coordination, research and operational support that contributes to the effective delivery of research activities and programs.

Duties:

• Support qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation activities including literature reviews, environmental scans, data collection, and basic analysis.
• Assist in the coordination of research projects including scheduling meetings, supporting community engagement activities, and maintaining project documentation.
• Contribute to the preparation of research ethics applications, reports, presentations, communication, including plain language summaries.
• Support engagement with community partners, including people with lived and living experience (PWLE), service providers, and Yukon First Nations, ensuring respectful and culturally appropriate interactions.
• Assist with the organization of workshops, gatherings, and knowledge sharing events.
• Identifies issues related to data quality or project coordination and flags for supervisors.
• Exercises judgment with confidential research information using ethics protocols.

Knowledge and Skills

• Foundational understanding of research methods including literature reviews and basic qualitative or quantitative approaches.
• Ability to work respectfully with diverse communities.
• Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity, particularly in relation to Indigenous communities.
• Understanding of ethical research practices (TCPS2 training considered an asset).
• Strong: organizational skills, attention to detail, written and verbal communication.

Assets
• Experience working with northern, rural, or Indigenous communities.
• Knowledge of OCAP® principles.
• Experience supporting community engagement activities.

Piper Fordham, research assistant with YSPOR, is conducting surveys to help build policies and practices that foster a culturally safe, comfortable environment for Indigenous Peoples in a healthcare setting.

We invite First Nations individuals to share their insights and experiences accessing care at the WGH and KDCC healthcare centers. Participants will have the opportunity to enter a draw to win $250 in local gift cards.
