Kinda chic to be supporting Health Research in the Yukon!

Purpose & Goal:

“Building the Future: A Vision for Indigenous Youth Leadership in Yukon’s Healthcare and Wellness Workforce” (BTF) project aims to understand the barriers indigenous youth living in the Yukon face when considering or pursuing healthcare and wellness careers, and what resources can best support their pathways into the field.

This will lead to community-driven solutions that support an informed and equitable choice in pursuing a career in healthcare and wellness. It will allow for accessible opportunities, while still retaining a rich connection to youths’ home community.

Methods:

Sean Barnaby, YSPOR Junior Researcher, will conduct one-on-one interviews and sharing circles with up to 6 participants
Interviews and focus groups lasting 45-60 minutes.
Documentation will include audio recordings and hand-written notes.
Audio will be transcribed, and notes copied before recordings are destroyed.

Data Use:

All data collected that you consent to being analyzed and published will be used to make recommendations.

Key Points to Know:

-Participation is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.
- You may choose how much to answer or you may skip any questions.
- You decide the location, time, and method of the interview.
- You can request no audio recording, only written notes.
- You can erase your comments until final publication.
- You can decide whether to associate your name with your quotes.
- Transcripts and data will be deidentified and stored for 5 years with CAFN, before being destroyed, transferred or repatriated
- If participating in a focus group, participants will be asked to keep the information shared confidential but it cannot be guaranteed. If this is a potential issue for you, you are welcome to request a one-on-one interview.

The YSPOR's Junior Researcher Program creates opportunities for Yukon youth ages 16–30 to engage in meaningful health research. Through the program, youth can contribute to, co-develop, and lead impactful research projects that address health priorities in the Yukon.
The program also provides opportunities to connect with other youth involved in health research, access mentorships from research professionals, while gaining valuable research and work experience, building new skills, and contributing to projects that can make a difference in their communities.
Supporting youth voices in research helps create more inclusive, relevant, and impactful health research in the Yukon.
We will be highlighting the projects that some of the Junior Researchers are working on in the coming months!

YSPOR’s commitment to improving health outcomes in the Yukon begins with ensuring that the right information reaches the people who can use it. Knowledge mobilization is a key way to turn evidence into informed action.

What is knowledge mobilization you may ask?!

It is a process in which we review reports, documents and information regarding your health related projects and turn them into accessible resources to reach the people who can benefit from it the most.

Rather than simply publishing findings, knowledge mobilization focuses on ensuring that knowledge is shared, understood, adapted to context, and applied in practice, policy, or decision-making. YSPOR can help bridge the gap between knowledge and action!

Help us welcome another wonderful summer student;

Sharon joined the YSPOR team in Dawson City as a Summer Research Assistant from St. Catharines, Ontario. She holds a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from Brock University and will begin the Physician Assistant program at the University of Toronto this fall. Her undergraduate research explored international students' access to campus sexual health services, sparking a passion for people-oriented research that she is excited to build on with YSPOR. Outside of work, Sharon enjoys spending time with friends, hiking, going to concerts, and trying new restaurants!

What an amazing summer we have had! You may have noticed we have been building our team, which comes with lots of excitement! We are building our capacity to do more really great things in community.

Today we are welcoming our newest junior researcher to the team! She’s been super eager to start new projects in Old Crow 😃 so keep your eyes peeled for news and updates about the great projects she will be supporting.

Allison Schafer recently joined our team in April 2026. She was raised in Old Crow, Yukon and is a Vuntut Gwitchin citizen. Allison graduated high school in 2022. She grew up with valuable teachings such as going on the land camping, hunting, getting wood etc. Allison also Has cultural teachings at home such as learning her language with her grandparents and within the community, and Jigging from a young age. She also enjoys sewing and is always learning new projects such as slippers (moccasins), Earrings/jewelry.
