Thank you for sharing your story, Harkirat!
Woodworking runs deep in Harkirat Kaur’s family, and now she’s carving her own path in YukonU’s Pre-Apprentice Carpentry program. “My father and grandfather run a factory that makes harmoniums in Haryana, India, and my grandfather and brothers are in the same business. I’ve been seeing how to do it and wanted to go into the wood business.”
In 2018, Harkirat attended YukonU as an international student and graduated with a General Studies diploma. After spending time back in India, she returned to the Yukon and gained permanent residency. Now she’s taking Carpentry with instructor Meagan Christie.
“Every day I learn something new. We’re getting into the shop, going to build toolboxes and a cabin later on. The theory is like a third language to me; English is the second. My friends help, the instructor and the vibes are great. I’m enjoying it because it’s something different.”
Harkirat’s family are supportive of her learning journey, and recently visited her, toured the shop and discovered similar tools to the ones they use in India.
Harkirat reflected, “If I was in India, I don't think I could have done carpentry – it’s a man's job rather than a woman's.” Looking ahead, Harkirat plans to express her artistic side by working with natural elements, cabinets and finishing work.
