Armed with very transferable knowledge, skills and experience, journalism graduates go on to write and deliver stories on all written and broadcast platforms. Students also develop an array of social media skills and undergo experiential learning through the program’s ‘working newsroom’, before moving on to a seven-week field placement, applying their skills in a professional environment.

A great profile of our student Morgan Kelly, written by another student, Dakota Evans.

Morgan Kelly returned to Durham College in 2017 to start a new journey in Journalism – Mass Media, two years after she dropped out of her first program.

Kelly saved up everything she worked for to buy a new laptop, textbooks, tuition as well as support her family all out of pocket.

“I wasn’t always able to complete my assignments on time due to my busy schedule and I was sometimes late to class because I was so mentally and physically exhausted,” said Kelly.

When Kelly was failing, she spoke to her student advisor at Durham College and worked out a plan to make sure she was able to succeed.

Kelly shared she was able to overcome her challenges with perseverance and by taking risks.

She also volunteered for numerous opportunities through her program as well as asking for feedback on as many things as she could with her professors.

“In my program, I did things I never dreamed I could do or achieve. I was able to ask rock star Sting a question during a press conference, win three awards in my second-year and intern at one of my favourite radio stations. It still feels unreal,” said Kelly.

RISE is a program offered to DC students who may have barriers that stop them from achieving success.

RISE thrives when students become “RISEing Stars,” like Kelly.

The program offers one-on-one coaching, mentoring and programs that celebrate the diverse population of DC students.
